There is no work visa ban for Pakistanis in the UAE β Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UAE has confirmed this publicly. Every year, tens of thousands of Pakistanis move to the UAE legally for work. The key thing to understand: you do not apply for a work visa yourself. Your employer does it for you. Here is exactly how the process works.
Step 1: Get a genuine job offer
- A UAE employer offers you a position and issues an official offer letter or employment contract.
- Check the offer before you pay anything. Real employers pay recruitment and visa costs. If an “agent” demands a large fee for the job itself, walk away.
- Verify the company: check its trade licence, website, and presence. Fake job offers are the most common scam targeting Pakistani job seekers.
Step 2: Your employer applies for the work permit
- The employer files for your work permit through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE).
- For Dubai-based employers, the process often runs through GDRFA, which is frequently quicker than the nationwide ICP route.
- A police character certificate from Pakistan is now required for work visa cases. Apply for it early β it takes time.
Step 3: Entry permit and travel
- Once the work permit is approved, you receive an entry permit to travel to the UAE.
- Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.
Step 4: Medical fitness test and Emirates ID
- After arrival, you complete a medical fitness test at an approved centre.
- You are then issued an Emirates ID, your official identity card in the UAE.
- Some employers ask workers from Pakistan for a pre-departure medical as well β ask your employer what applies to you.
Step 5: Residence visa and start work
- Your residence visa is stamped/issued, linked to your employer.
- Only now do you legally start working β for your sponsoring employer.
Important facts and figures:
- Work visa costs typically range from around AED 1,200 to 3,500 depending on category, plus medical, Emirates ID, and attestation costs.
- A standard work visa is usually issued for 2 years and is renewable.
- Around 40,000 to 50,000 Pakistanis are employed in the UAE and receive visas each year β the system works for genuine applicants.
- There is no official ban on work visas for Pakistanis. Delays and extra scrutiny exist, but the route is open.
Common mistakes to avoid:
- Never travel on a visit visa with a plan to “convert” it by working illegally. Attend interviews on a visit visa, yes β but start work only after the permit.
- Never pay for a “guaranteed” visa or job. Guarantees are a scam.
- Never submit fake documents or a fake experience letter. One fraud finding can mean a ban.
The legal route takes patience, but it is the only route that ends with you working, earning, and living in the UAE without fear.
Disclaimer: Work permit rules and fees change. Confirm current requirements with MoHRE, ICP/GDRFA, and Pakistan’s Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment before proceeding. This post is general information, not legal advice.
