You came to Dubai on a visit visa, attended interviews, and got a job offer. Now what? This is the moment many Pakistanis get wrong — either by starting work illegally, or by overstaying while waiting. Here is the legal way to convert from a visit visa to a work visa after a job offer.
The golden rule:
- You can search for jobs and attend interviews on a visit visa. You cannot start working until your work permit and residence visa are approved.
- “Conversion” does not happen by itself. It happens when your employer applies for your work permit through MoHRE. That application is the conversion.
The legal conversion process, step by step:
Step 1: Get the genuine job offer
- A UAE employer offers you a position with an official offer letter and employment contract.
- Verify the company independently: trade licence, website, physical presence. Fake offers are common — a fake offer means a fake conversion.
Step 2: Your employer applies for the work permit
- The employer files for your work permit through MoHRE (and GDRFA for Dubai-based employers).
- A police character certificate from Pakistan is now required for work visa cases — if you don’t have one ready, apply immediately, as it takes time.
- Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months.
Step 3: Status change before your visit visa expires
- The work permit and status change process must be completed before your visit visa expires.
- If your visit visa is running short, discuss timing with your employer immediately. You may need a visa extension to bridge the gap — extensions must also be applied for before expiry.
- Never let your visit visa expire while “waiting” for the work permit. Overstay fines are AED 50 per day plus a AED 200 exit charge, and overstaying over 30 days risks a multi-year ban.
Step 4: Medical test and Emirates ID
- After the work permit is approved, complete your medical fitness test at an approved centre.
- Attend your biometric appointment and receive your Emirates ID.
- Your residence visa is then issued, linked to your employer.
Step 5: Start work — legally
- Only now, with your work permit and residence visa approved, do you start working for your sponsoring employer.
- Keep copies of your work permit, residence visa, Emirates ID, and employment contract safe.
What conversion is NOT:
- It is not automatic. A job offer alone does not change your visa status.
- It is not something an agent can sell you. If an agent offers to “convert” your visa for a fee without an employer, it is a scam.
- It is not permission to work during the process. Working before the permit is approved is illegal, even if the employer says it is “just training” or “on trial.”
Timing tips:
- Start the PCC process in Pakistan before you travel, if you are coming to job-hunt. It is the document that most often delays conversion.
- Keep your visit visa valid throughout the process. Track the expiry date from day one.
- Communicate with your employer about timelines — a good employer manages this process routinely and will guide you.
The numbers:
- Around 40,000 to 50,000 Pakistanis receive UAE employment visas each year, and many of them started exactly this way: visit visa, interviews, offer, legal conversion.
- The legal route works. The shortcut — working without a permit — ends with fines, deportation, and bans.
Get the offer, let the employer file the permit, keep your visit visa valid, and start work only when the paperwork is complete. That is the conversion that lasts.
Disclaimer: Status change rules and fees change. Confirm current requirements with your employer and on official UAE portals (MoHRE, ICP, GDRFA) before proceeding. This post is general information, not legal advice.
