Your Dubai visit is going well β family time, business meetings, or a job search that needs a few more weeks. But your visa has an expiry date, and missing it means fines of AED 50 per day plus a AED 200 exit charge, and a possible multi-year ban after 30 days. The good news: extending your stay legally is straightforward if you act before your visa expires.
How extensions work:
- Many visit visas can be extended through ICP or GDRFA for an additional fee.
- A 60-day visa can often be extended by 30 days.
- A 90-day visa can often be extended by two 30-day periods.
- Extensions must be applied for BEFORE your current visa expires. Once you have overstayed, you are in fine territory, not extension territory.
Extension routes:
- Through your sponsor: if a family member or company sponsored your visit, they can often initiate the extension.
- Through a registered travel agent or airline: the same channels that process visit visas for Pakistanis in 2026 can usually handle extensions.
- Through ICP/GDRFA service centres or official online portals: for eligible visa types, you can apply directly with your passport and current visa details.
- Always confirm your specific visa type is extendable β not every visa category allows extension, and the rules depend on how you entered.
What you need for an extension:
- Valid passport (6+ months validity).
- Current visa details.
- Proof of funds or sponsor support for the extended stay.
- Accommodation proof for the extended period.
- The extension fee, which varies by visa type and duration.
Costs and timing:
- Extension fees vary β confirm the exact fee for your visa type before applying, and budget for it.
- Apply at least a few days before expiry. Last-day applications risk processing delays that push you into overstay.
- Processing is usually quick, but never assume same-day approval. Apply early.
What NOT to do:
- Never overstay “just a few days” while waiting for a job or a decision. A few days of overstay still means fines, and the record follows you.
- Never use an agent who offers to “fix” an overstay without a proper process. Irregular fixes create bigger problems.
- Never work on an extended visit visa. Extensions extend your visit, not your right to work. Working still requires a work permit through your employer.
Extension vs status change:
- Extension: you stay longer as a visitor. Same rules, longer stay.
- Status change: you move from visitor to resident β for example, when an employer hires you and applies for your work permit, or when family sponsorship begins. A status change must also happen before your visit visa expires.
- Both must be completed before expiry. The expiry date is the deadline for everything.
Plan your trip with the expiry date in mind:
- Before you travel, know your visa’s exact expiry date and the extension options for your visa type.
- If your plans might run long β a job search, a family event, a business negotiation β research extension costs and process before you fly.
- Set a reminder a week before expiry. That one reminder can save you thousands of dirhams and a ban.
Extending legally is easy. Overstaying is expensive. Choose the easy option, and apply before your visa runs out.
Disclaimer: Extension rules, fees, and eligibility change by visa type. Confirm current rules on official UAE portals (ICP, GDRFA) before applying. This post is general information, not legal advice.
