What to Do When the Tyre Pressure Warning Lights Up on a Dubai Highway in Summer

By DXB TALK Β·

You are cruising on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road or Emirates Road, the cabin is cool, and then a small amber tyre symbol lights up on the dashboard. In Dubai summer heat, that tyre pressure warning deserves immediate respect. It does not always mean a blowout is about to happen, but hot tarmac, high speeds and an under-inflated tyre are a dangerous combination. Knowing what to do in the next few minutes keeps you, your passengers and other drivers safe.

What the Warning Light Is Telling You

Most modern cars have a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, or TPMS, that alerts you when one or more tyres drops significantly below the recommended pressure. Heat complicates the picture. Pressure rises as tyres warm up on long drives, so a warning in summer can point to a slow puncture, a damaged valve, a rim issue, or a tyre that was already low before you set off and has now triggered the sensor.

Do not ignore it and hope it clears. An under-inflated tyre flexes more, builds even more heat, wears unevenly, uses more fuel and is far more likely to fail at highway speed.

If the light flashes at start-up and then stays on, your handbook may indicate a system fault rather than low pressure β€” that still needs checking soon, even if handling feels normal.

Your Immediate Steps on the Highway

Stay calm and avoid sudden braking or sharp steering. Ease off the accelerator, hold the wheel firmly and check how the car feels. If it pulls to one side, vibrates, thumps, or you hear flapping or hissing, you may have a serious puncture or tyre damage β€” treat it as urgent.

Follow these safety steps:

  • Signal early and move steadily towards the hard shoulder or the nearest safe exit or service area if you can reach it without driving far on a visibly flat tyre
  • Stop as far from moving traffic as possible, straighten the wheels and apply the handbrake
  • Switch on hazard lights immediately
  • Place your warning triangle well behind the car if you have one and it is safe to do so, following Dubai Police highway safety guidance
  • Move all passengers out of the car on the side away from traffic and stand behind a barrier if there is one β€” never stay in a car stopped in or near a live lane

If you feel unsafe stopping where you are, or traffic is very heavy, slow down with hazards on and proceed carefully to the next exit or petrol station. Call Dubai Police on the emergency number listed on official channels if you are in danger or blocking traffic, and use roadside assistance for recovery rather than risking a dangerous tyre change beside fast traffic.

Checking and Inflating Safely

Only inspect the tyres once you are fully stopped in a safe place. Look for nails, cuts, bulges or a tyre sitting noticeably lower than the others. Do not touch a very hot tyre or wheel for long, and never remove a damaged tyre on the highway shoulder if you are not confident and clearly safe β€” calling mobile assistance is the wiser choice for most drivers.

If the tyre looks intact and you can reach a nearby petrol station air pump, drive slowly and check pressures against the sticker inside the driver’s door frame, not the number printed on the tyre sidewall. Inflate when you can and monitor. If pressure drops again within hours or days, you have a slow leak that needs repair, not just air.

After inflating, the TPMS light may take a short drive to reset. If it stays on, visit a tyre shop for inspection.

Preventing a Repeat in Summer

Check pressures at least every two weeks in summer, early in the morning before driving when tyres are cold. Keep a small pressure gauge in the glovebox, maintain your spare tyre as well, and have tyres inspected for age and heat cracking at each service β€” old tyres can fail even with good tread in extreme heat.

A warning light is your car asking for help early. Slow down, get safe, keep people away from traffic and get the tyre checked properly. That calm response turns a stressful highway moment into a manageable stop.
