What Dubai Car Window Tint Rules Allow: Percentages, Exemptions and Fines Explained

By DXB TALK Β·

Window tint in Dubai is not just about looks. In summer, a good tint makes a parked car far less brutal to return to, cuts glare and gives passengers some privacy. It is also one of the most misunderstood rules for drivers, with old advice and film-shop claims often repeating numbers that no longer apply. This guide explains how the rules are generally understood, and why you should confirm the current position on rta.ae or with Dubai Police before paying for film.

What the percentage actually means

Tint is usually described by how much visible light it lets through, often shortened to VLT. A higher transmission means a lighter film, while a darker film lets less light through. Workshops and drivers do not always use the terms the same way, and some quote the darkness of the film while official limits are framed by how much darkening is permitted. Do not rely on a shop’s assurance that a film is “legal tint” or “RTA passed”. Ask what product is being fitted, what its stated transmission is, and keep the invoice. Rules can change, so treat any percentage you read β€” including here β€” as approximate background, and check rta.ae or Dubai Police for the figure that applies today.

The limits drivers commonly encounter

In recent years, guidance widely reported in the UAE has allowed tinting of side and rear windows up to around 50 percent, with the windscreen treated much more strictly β€” typically only a limited strip or very light treatment, if any, rather than a full dark film. That summary is deliberately hedged, because the exact wording and measurement method matter and are commonly misstated. As a practical approach:

  • Assume side and rear windows have a maximum β€” commonly discussed as around 50 percent β€” and do not exceed it
  • Treat the windscreen as essentially off-limits for dark film unless a current official source clearly says otherwise
  • Be wary of mirror, coloured or very dark privacy films, which are more likely to attract attention
  • Remember factory glass is already slightly tinted, so added film can push the total beyond the limit
  • Ask the installer to measure the finished glass, not just quote the film’s box rating

If you buy a used car with dark tint already fitted, do not assume it is compliant because the previous owner used it. You are responsible for the car you drive and present for testing.

Exemptions, medical cases and special vehicles

Exemptions exist only in limited circumstances. They are specific and documented, and are not granted simply because a driver prefers darker glass. Medical exemptions, where available, typically require supporting evidence and formal approval through the relevant authority, not a note from a tint shop. Certain official or specially approved vehicles may also be treated differently. If you believe you qualify, check RTA and Dubai Police guidance and apply before fitting darker film, keeping any approval in the car. Do not fit the film first and hope to regularise it later. For most private drivers, assume no exemption applies unless you hold written confirmation.

Testing, fines and what happens if you get it wrong

Tint can be checked at the annual vehicle test linked to registration renewal, and during roadside enforcement. If the film is judged too dark, the usual result is a requirement to remove or replace it, plus a fine. Fines here have typically been reported in the hundreds of dirhams, but amounts can change, so confirm current penalties on official channels. Removal also costs money, and cheap film can leave adhesive if stripped carelessly. A failed test costs time too: you must correct the tint and present the car again.

Choosing film that helps without causing trouble

You do not need the darkest film for real heat relief. Modern ceramic heat-rejection films can cut significant solar heat and ultraviolet light while staying visibly lighter, which suits Dubai conditions well. Use a reputable installer, see samples on glass, agree the specification in writing, and keep the warranty and invoice. If a deal depends on going darker than the official guidance you have checked, it is not worth taking.

Handled sensibly, tint is one of the best comfort upgrades for a Dubai car. Check the current rule on rta.ae, stay comfortably inside it, and you will get the shade you want without fines, failed tests or removal bills.
