Using the Dubai Tram to Reach Marina, JBR and Al Sufouh Without a Car

By DXB TALK Β·

Dubai Marina, JBR and Al Sufouh are among the most enjoyable parts of Dubai on foot β€” and some of the most frustrating to drive, especially on weekend evenings when traffic around The Walk slows to a crawl. The Dubai Tram was built for this stretch of coast, linking the Red Line Metro to the Marina towers, JBR beach and the quieter Al Sufouh corridor. This guide shows how to use it without a car.

The Route: Marina, JBR and Al Sufouh

The Tram runs along Al Sufouh Road and through Dubai Marina. Stations include Jumeirah Beach Residence 1 and 2 for The Walk and The Beach, Dubai Marina and Marina Mall, Jumeirah Lake Towers, and stations towards Knowledge Park, Media City and Al Sufouh. Trams also serve the Palm Jumeirah gateway, for the Palm Monorail β€” a separate service with its own ticket.

The whole line sits within a single Nol zone, keeping Tram-only fares at the lowest tier. Trams are smaller than Metro trains, run at street level and stop more frequently, so a ride feels like gliding between neighbourhood stops. It suits short hops too sweaty to walk in summer β€” from Marina Mall to JBR for dinner, or from a JLT office to the beach.

Connecting From the Metro: Sobha Realty and DMCC

Most car-free visitors arrive via the Red Line, at two interchanges. Sobha Realty Metro station connects directly to Dubai Marina Tram station by an air-conditioned walkway, the natural gateway for Marina Walk, Marina Mall and the southern towers. DMCC Metro station connects to Jumeirah Lake Towers Tram station, suiting the northern Marina, JLT and walks towards JBR.

Tap out of the Metro, follow Tram signs, and tap in again at the Tram platform. If you change within the usual transfer window β€” typically around 30 minutes β€” your legs are usually combined into one zone-based fare. Use the same card throughout. Gold Class also exists on the Tram, charged at Gold rates, so check signage if you hold Silver.

  • Marina Mall and Marina Walk: Red Line to Sobha Realty, then Tram to Dubai Marina or Marina Mall.
  • JBR and The Beach: Tram to Jumeirah Beach Residence 1 or 2, then walk to The Walk.
  • JLT offices: Red Line to DMCC, or Tram to Jumeirah Lake Towers.
  • Al Sufouh and Knowledge Park: stay on the Tram beyond the Media City-side stations.

Timings, Tickets and On-Board Rules

The Tram generally runs from early morning until around 1am, with a later start on Fridays, but first and last trams vary by station. Frequencies are typically every six to ten minutes by day, widening late at night. Check live times in the S’hail app or on rta.ae before a late return from JBR.

You pay with Nol only β€” there are no paper tickets. Tap in on the platform validator before boarding and tap out after leaving, even for two stops. Eating and drinking are not permitted, the women and children’s cabin should be respected, and luggage space is limited compared with the Metro. All stations are step-free.

Planning a Car-Free Day

A relaxed itinerary writes itself: coffee around Marina Mall, two stops to JBR for a swim at The Beach, a promenade walk in the cooler late afternoon, then Tram and Metro home without thinking about parking β€” which at JBR on a Friday evening can take longer than the ride itself. Al Sufouh residents use the line in reverse for gym and supermarket trips beyond walking distance in the heat.

For the Palm, change at Palm Jumeirah station and buy a separate Monorail ticket if continuing to Atlantis β€” the Monorail does not accept Nol, which surprises many visitors. Each person needs their own Nol card.

When the Tram Is Not the Best Option

The Tram is deliberately local. It will not get you to Downtown, Deira or the airport alone, and at peak times street-level sections can slow slightly. Taxis are faster for Al Sufouh addresses set back from the line, and the walk to a specific tower can be five to ten minutes outdoors β€” a real consideration at midday in August, so carry water.

Used for what it does best, though, the Tram turns a busy leisure district into an easy, low-cost, car-free zone. Link it with the Red Line at Sobha Realty or DMCC, tap carefully, confirm the last tram in S’hail, and you will visit Marina, JBR and Al Sufouh far more often, without parking stress.
