Understanding Jewellery Trade-In and Exchange Offers in Dubai: Getting a Valuation Before You Commit

By DXB TALK Β·

Almost every family in Dubai has jewellery that no longer gets worn β€” a bangle in the wrong size, a gift set, or gold bought years ago in a different style. Trade-in and exchange offers at Dubai jewellers can be a sensible way to turn that piece into something you will actually wear, but only if you understand how the valuation is built. The headline offer in a shop window rarely tells the whole story, so take your time, get the maths in writing, and never feel pressured to decide on the spot.

How a Trade-In Valuation Usually Works

For gold jewellery, the starting point is typically the weight and purity of the metal, valued against the prevailing gold rate on that day. In Dubai, daily retail gold rates are commonly referenced through the Dubai Jewellery Group, and reputable shops will show or explain the rate they are using. Confirm which rate applies β€” for example for 22-karat or 21-karat gold β€” because the purity makes a real difference to the melt value of your piece.

From that metal value, a jeweller may then apply deductions. These can include a melting or refining charge, deductions for stones, enamel or non-gold components that are weighed with the piece, and sometimes a trade-in percentage depending on whether you are exchanging at the same shop where you bought it. Making charges you paid when you originally bought the piece are typically not recovered in a trade-in, which surprises many people. Diamonds and precious stones are valued separately, and smaller stones may be given a modest value or excluded altogether, so ask for that part to be itemised.

Getting an Independent Valuation First

Before you commit to any exchange, get at least two valuations on the same day if you can. Gold rates move, so comparing offers from different weeks is not a fair comparison. Take your original invoice, any certificates for diamonds or gemstones, and a valid ID, as shops may ask for these for their records. A clear valuation should state the gross weight, the net gold weight after deductions, the purity, the rate used, and the final amount offered.

  • Ask for the weight to be checked in front of you on a calibrated scale
  • Ask what has been deducted for stones, springs, clasps or other non-gold parts
  • Confirm whether the offer is for cash sale, store exchange only, or both β€” exchange values are sometimes higher
  • Check if there is a minimum purchase requirement to use the full exchange value
  • Get the offer in writing and note how long it remains valid

If a shop will not explain its deductions, walk away politely. Reputable jewellers in the Gold Souk in Deira, Gold and Diamond Park, and major mall branches are used to these questions.

Exchange Offers, Promotions and the Small Print

Seasonal promotions often promise zero deduction or full-value exchange, but those offers usually come with conditions. They may apply only to jewellery originally bought from the same retailer, only within a certain period, only on making charges rather than metal value, or only when you purchase a new item above a certain amount. Diamond exchange policies are often different from gold policies, with their own buyback percentages that depend on certification and condition.

Read the terms on your invoice as well. Some retailers print their exchange and buyback policy on the back of the original bill, and that policy β€” not a general promotion you saw online β€” is what will apply to your piece. If you no longer have the invoice, ask what documentation they can accept instead and whether that changes the offer.

Making the Final Decision Calmly

Once you choose a new piece, check the full breakdown again before paying any difference: the exchange credit applied, the new item’s gold weight and rate, its making charges, any stone charges, and VAT where applicable. Dubai jewellery pricing is generally transparent when you ask for it line by line, so do not be shy about requesting a printed quotation.

Finally, think beyond price. Sentimental pieces and family gifts deserve a pause, even if the valuation is attractive. Consider remodelling or resizing instead. If you do go ahead, keep all new invoices and certificates together β€” they will make any future valuation quicker and fairer.
