Senior Citizens and Students Nol Discounts in Dubai: Eligibility, Documents and Renewal

By DXB TALK ·

Dubai’s Metro, tram and buses are already good value, but for senior citizens and students they can cost considerably less. The RTA offers concession fares through personalised Nol cards, giving eligible seniors and students a discount of around half the standard fare on many services, while some categories travel free under separate schemes. The discount is never automatic: you need the right personalised card, the right documents, and a renewal before the concession expires.

Who Qualifies for the Discounts

Student discounts typically cover school and university students within an eligible age range at recognised UAE institutions. Senior discounts are aimed at older residents, with eligibility generally beginning around age 60, while Emirati seniors may qualify for free travel under the dedicated category for nationals. People of Determination have separate arrangements through a different card category.

Exact age limits, residency conditions and discount levels are set by the RTA and can change, so treat any figure, including the typical discount of around 50 percent, as a guide. Confirm your category and current terms on rta.ae before applying, especially as visitor Nol cards carry no concessions.

The Personalised Nol Card You Need

Concessions are loaded onto a personalised, registered Nol card carrying your name and photo, rather than an anonymous card. A personalised card also protects your balance if it is lost, which matters when it carries a concession you have proved eligibility for.

You can typically apply through the RTA website, at Metro station ticket offices, or at Customer Happiness Centres, with the card issued once documents are approved. There is usually a modest fee, and processing typically takes a number of working days, so apply well before the start of term or a period when a senior relative will rely on the Metro daily.

Documents to Prepare

Having the paperwork ready is what makes the application painless. Take clear copies as well as the originals, and if you are applying for a parent, bring their documents and your own ID too, in case staff need to verify the family relationship on the spot. While the exact list should be confirmed on rta.ae, applications typically require:

  • A valid Emirates ID for the applicant
  • A recent passport-style photograph, if not captured during the application
  • For students, a current enrolment letter or student ID from the school or university confirming active study
  • For senior citizens, proof of age, which the Emirates ID usually provides
  • For a child or dependant applying through a parent, the supporting family documents the RTA requests

Make sure names match across documents, as spelling differences between a school letter and an Emirates ID are a common cause of delay. For students, enrolment proof must be current; a previous year’s letter or an expired student card is unlikely to be accepted.

Renewal: Where Most People Get Caught Out

The student concession typically runs for around a year, tied to the academic year, after which it must be renewed with fresh proof of enrolment. Senior concessions also have a validity period. If a concession lapses, the card usually still works but charges full fare, and many people only notice after weeks of overpaying.

Set a reminder a month before expiry. Renewal generally follows the original application route, through RTA channels with updated documents. Students moving from school to university, or finishing studies, should check which category applies next rather than using a concession they no longer qualify for.

Using the Card Well

The concession card is personal and non-transferable: lending it breaches the conditions and can lead to confiscation and fines during inspections. Keep it topped up, tap in and out correctly so the right fare is calculated, and keep it registered so a lost card can be blocked.

For families, check every member’s eligibility: a household with a student and a senior parent could be saving on most daily travel without realising it. Start with the document list on rta.ae, apply in good time, diarise the renewal, and the discount will keep working journey after journey.
