A freight forwarder coordinates parts of the shipping process, but service scope can differ widely. Comparing providers on the same shipment details makes quotes more meaningful.
Start with the requirements
Share the cargo dimensions, weight, commodity, origin, destination, preferred timing and any handling needs. Ask which services are included, which charges are estimates, who handles customs clearance and what documents the shipper must provide. Confirm whether the quote includes collection, terminal handling, delivery and storage.
Build a repeatable process
Check the provider’s experience with your route and product type, communication process, cargo insurance options and procedure for delays or damage. Ask for a written list of possible surcharges and who approves them. Compare the total door-to-door cost, not only the headline freight rate.
Check the latest guidance
Shipping routes, charges and customs requirements change. Confirm the final quotation and responsibilities in writing, and obtain specialist advice for hazardous, temperature-controlled or regulated cargo.
