School Uniform, Device and Book Costs in Dubai: Budgeting for the Extras

By DXB TALK Β·

Tuition fees get all the attention when families budget for school in Dubai, but the extras catch parents out in the first term. Uniforms, devices, books, stationery, trips, and activity charges can add a noticeable amount on top of fees, especially if more than one child is starting at once. Planning early, and knowing what is required versus optional, makes the first months much calmer.

Uniforms: more items than you expect

Most Dubai private schools have a specific supplier and a list that goes well beyond a shirt and trousers or dress. Typically it includes everyday uniform, PE kit, a hat or cap, and sometimes a blazer, cardigan, or house shirt. Costs vary widely by school and supplier, and growing children may need replacements during the year, so avoid buying many spares in the smallest size in August.

  • Everyday uniform sets β€” most families start with around three sets
  • PE kit, trainers, and a separate sports bag
  • Sun hat, swim kit, and towel where swimming is timetabled
  • Name labels, sewing, and alterations
  • Winter layers for air-conditioned classrooms and cooler mornings

Ask whether the school runs a second-hand uniform sale or swap group. Many do, and it is a sensible way to get blazers and PE kit children outgrow quickly. Also check whether shoes must be a particular style, as buying the wrong pair is a common avoidable expense. Confirm the current list and prices with the school, as they change between years.

Devices and digital learning charges

From upper primary onwards, many schools operate a bring-your-own-device programme or require a specific tablet or laptop, sometimes bought through a school portal. Others include device use in fees for younger children. The headline price is only part of it: add a sturdy case, headphones, insurance or repair cover, and any paid apps the school asks families to fund.

Before you buy, get the specification in writing β€” operating system, screen size, battery life, and management software all matter, and a device that does not meet the spec may not be allowed on the network. Ask whether the school offers instalments or a loan scheme. Second-hand can work well for older students if the battery and software are still supported.

Books, stationery and workbooks

Some schools include textbooks in tuition, others charge a separate book or resource fee, and many sit in between, with workbooks and online subscriptions billed annually. In the early years the list may be small; in secondary, subject sets, calculators, art materials, and technology consumables grow quickly. Exam years can add entry fees for external boards, typically passed to parents and confirmed in advance.

Keep every list and receipt. If a book fee is charged, ask what it covers, whether digital versions are included, and what happens if you join mid-year. For stationery, a single well-organised purchase at the start of term is usually cheaper and less stressful than repeated small top-ups.

The other extras that fill the year

School photos, class trips, workshops, concerts, sports fixtures, and charity days each cost a little, and together they add up. Optional clubs by external providers, music lessons and instrument hire, lunches, and bus transport are often the largest extras after uniform and devices. None of this means a school is poor value β€” it just means your real budget should sit above the tuition figure on the website.

A practical approach is to build a simple extras pot for the year. Ask admissions for a typical extras list for your year group, and set aside a contingency for growth spurts and lost items β€” because lost water bottles and PE kits are a Dubai school rite of passage.

How to keep costs under control

Buy required items first, delay optional spares, label everything, and use school second-hand sales without embarrassment β€” experienced parents all do. Confirm every fee on the school’s current schedule or via KHDA resources at khda.gov.ae before paying a third-party supplier, and question any charge you do not recognise.

The extras will never be zero, but they should not be a surprise. With a clear list, a realistic pot, and a little second-hand shopping, you can budget for uniforms, devices, and books confidently and focus on what matters: your child settling in and learning well.
