RTA Parking in Dubai: Zones, Text Codes, Fees and Fines to Avoid

Parking in Dubai is simple once you understand the system, and expensive when you guess. Most public street parking is paid, controlled by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and operated day to day by Parkin. The bays are clearly marked, each area has a zone code on the signboard, and you pay for the time you need before you walk away. This guide explains the zones, the text codes, the usual fees and the fines that catch out new drivers most often.

How Paid Parking Works in Dubai

In most zones, paid parking runs from 8am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday. Outside those hours, and all day on Sundays and official public holidays, parking in most zones is free. A small number of special zones charge around the clock, so never rely on the general rule alone. The signboard next to the bays is the final word: it shows the zone letter and code, the hours that apply, and the maximum time you are allowed to stay in that bay.

That maximum stay matters. Some busy commercial bays are limited to four hours, while others allow much longer stays. If you need the car in one place all day, check the sign first and consider a designated longer-stay zone or a multi-storey car park instead.

Zones and What You Will Pay

Dubai divides paid parking into lettered zones, and the busier the area, the higher the tariff. As a rough guide:

  • Standard zones: around AED 2 to AED 4 per hour, with cheaper half-hour options in some areas.
  • Premium zones in busy commercial districts: higher rates at peak times, 8am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm, sometimes around AED 6 per hour.
  • Special zones such as parts of Jumeirah Lake Towers: rates can be noticeably higher than standard street parking.
  • Multi-storey car parks: charged hourly around the clock, which suits longer stays.

Tariffs change from time to time and now include VAT, so treat these figures as planning estimates. Always confirm the current fee on the parking sign, in the app, or on the official RTA or Parkin channels before you pay.

Paying by Text, App or Machine

The quickest method is the mParking text service. Send a message to 7275 with your plate number, the zone code from the sign and the number of hours, separated by spaces, for example: plate, zone code, then 1, 2 or more hours. You will get a confirmation message back, and that message is your ticket, so keep it. A small SMS charge, currently 30 fils, is added, and the amount comes off your mobile balance or bill. If you park for longer than planned, extend before the ticket expires rather than after.

If you prefer an app, you can pay through the Parkin app, the RTA Dubai app or DubaiNow, and save your vehicle details for next time. The roadside machines still work too, taking coins and nol cards in many areas. Whichever method you use, double-check two things before paying: the zone code for the exact bay you are in, and your plate number. A correct payment for the wrong zone is still treated as no payment.

Fines That Are Easy to Avoid

  • No valid ticket, or an expired ticket: the most common fine, usually issued when the paid time runs out or the session was never started.
  • Exceeding the maximum stay shown on the sign, even if you keep paying.
  • Parking outside marked bays, on pavements, across two bays, or blocking driveways and access points.
  • Using a reserved or disabled bay without the proper permit: this carries a heavy fine, around AED 1,000.
  • Parking in a no-parking area or where signs prohibit stopping: fines are higher still, and your car may cause an obstruction.

Fine amounts are set by the RTA and can change, so check the official RTA sources for the current schedule rather than relying on any single figure.

A Simple Routine That Works

Make it a habit: read the sign, note the zone code, pay for a little longer than you think you need, save the confirmation, and set a phone reminder ten minutes before expiry. Do that, and Dubai parking becomes a two-minute job instead of an expensive surprise.
