A business continuity plan helps a company respond to disruption such as a technology outage, supplier failure, inaccessible premises or loss of a key employee. The aim is to identify essential services and practical recovery steps.
Start with the requirements
List the activities that must continue, the people responsible and the systems or suppliers each activity depends on. Estimate how long the business can tolerate an interruption and what data or equipment is needed to resume operations. Identify alternatives for critical suppliers and communication channels.
Build a repeatable process
Write short response procedures, maintain an up-to-date contact list and define who can make urgent decisions. Back up important data and test whether it can actually be restored. Run a tabletop exercise with staff, note gaps and update the plan after incidents or major business changes.
Check the latest guidance
The right level of planning depends on company size, sector and contractual obligations. Regulated businesses may have specific continuity requirements; confirm these with the relevant authority.
