Montessori vs EYFS in Dubai Nurseries: How the Approaches Differ Day to Day

By DXB TALK Β·

Montessori and EYFS are the two names Dubai parents meet most often when choosing a nursery, and they can sound like rival philosophies. In reality, both value play, independence and warm relationships β€” but they organise the day, the classroom and the adult’s role differently. Knowing those day-to-day differences makes tours far more revealing than any label on the gate.

The Core Idea Behind Each Approach

EYFS is the English Early Years Foundation Stage framework. It defines areas of learning and development for children under five, and nurseries plan activities, themes and observations around them. The structure comes from the framework; the delivery is playful.

Montessori is a method developed by Maria Montessori, built around a carefully prepared environment, specific hands-on materials and long, uninterrupted periods in which children choose their own activities. Rather than following an external curriculum document, Montessori settings follow the child through set sequences of materials designed to teach one skill at a time.

What the Classroom Looks Like

In an EYFS nursery you will typically see themed areas that change with topics β€” a role-play corner that becomes a shop, a clinic or a space station, messy play, construction zones and displays of children’s work on the walls. Resources are varied and often rotated to match the current theme or the children’s interests.

In a Montessori classroom the shelves hold recognisable, ordered sets of materials: pink towers, sandpaper letters, bead chains and practical-life trays for pouring, buttoning and polishing. Everything has a place, the palette is usually calmer, and children return materials to the shelf before choosing the next activity. Mixed-age groups are common too, with younger children learning by watching older ones.

The Adult’s Role and the Shape of the Day

EYFS practitioners plan group times, stories and adult-led activities alongside free play. They observe children against developmental milestones, keep progress records and set next steps. Your child will usually have a key person who tracks their learning journey.

Montessori teachers β€” often called guides or directresses β€” demonstrate materials one-to-one or in small groups, then step back. The day typically includes a long work cycle of around two to three hours where children choose, repeat and tidy away activities at their own pace, with less whole-group instruction. Snack is often self-served when the child is ready, rather than at a set group moment.

Reading, Numbers and Independence

Both approaches introduce literacy and maths through play and hands-on experience, but the route differs:

  • EYFS: phonics, mark-making and counting woven into themes, stories and games, guided by milestones
  • Montessori: specific materials such as sandpaper letters and golden beads, introduced when the individual child shows readiness
  • EYFS independence: encouraged through routines, self-help skills and choices within planned activities
  • Montessori independence: central to everything β€” real tools, real tasks and responsibility for the environment from the start

Neither is automatically ahead. What matters is skilled staff applying their approach consistently.

Friendships and play look slightly different, too. EYFS settings usually build in plenty of group play, partner games and imaginative scenarios led by the children themselves. Montessori settings encourage collaboration through shared care of the classroom and older children helping younger ones, with fantasy play generally given less emphasis in the youngest classes than practical, real-world activity.

Choosing in Dubai Specifically

Be aware that names are not tightly protected. Some Dubai nurseries describe themselves as Montessori-inspired while blending EYFS planning and reporting, partly because parents and schools value EYFS-style progress records when children move into FS2 or KG. Others follow Montessori practice closely with formally trained staff. Ask directly: what training do teachers hold, which framework do assessments follow, and how will progress be reported to you?

Fees for both types vary widely by area, hours and facilities β€” typically, longer days and holiday cover cost more β€” so compare the full package in writing. Also consider the transition: children from both settings settle into Dubai schools successfully, but if your target school follows a British curriculum, ask how the nursery shares transition information.

The best test is a visit. In a strong setting of either type you will see calm, busy children, adults who know them well and an environment that invites independence. Decide which daily rhythm suits your child β€” then check the licence, the staff and the small print before you sign.
