La Mer and JBR Beach Days With Children: Shade, Splash Areas and Parking Tips

By DXB TALK ·

Beach days with children in Dubai work best when you plan for shade, water and an easy exit. La Mer in Jumeirah and JBR Beach by The Walk in Dubai Marina are two of the city’s most family-friendly stretches, but they suit different moods. JBR is lively, walkable and well served by cafes and toilets, while La Mer has traditionally offered a more laid-back feel. Facilities at La Mer have been changing with redevelopment work, so check its official channels before you go for what is open.

Choosing Between La Mer and JBR

JBR Beach, in front of The Walk and The Beach complex, is the safer bet if you want everything close together. The sand is wide, the water is usually calm in the morning, and you are never far from a cafe, an ice-cream shop, toilets and changing facilities. It gets busy, especially on weekends and in the late afternoon, but that bustle also means plenty of lifeguard coverage and a fun atmosphere for older children.

La Mer, between Jumeirah 1 and Pearl Jumeira, has generally felt quieter and more spread out, with boardwalks that suit a slower pace. Because parts have been redeveloped in recent years, splash areas, rentals and eateries may have changed, so treat older listings with caution and confirm facilities on the day. If certainty matters, start with JBR.

Shade, Splash Areas and Staying Comfortable

Natural shade is limited on both beaches, so bring your own plan. A pop-up shade tent for toddlers, a large umbrella and light cotton cover-ups make a bigger difference than extra toys. Aim to arrive before around 10am in the warmer months, or after 3.30pm, when the sand is cooler and younger children cope better. Apply sunscreen before you leave home, then reapply after swimming, even on hazy days.

For splash fun, JBR has typically offered inflatable water play offshore in season and small play areas near The Beach, with fees and age rules that change, so check prices on site. At La Mer, water play was a big draw in the past, but availability is best confirmed close to your visit. For under-fives, a bucket, a bowl of sea water in the shade and a change of clothes will often entertain them longer than any paid attraction.

  • Pack frozen water bottles that melt into cold drinks by midday
  • Bring swim nappies, a wet bag and a full change of clothes per child
  • Choose a meeting point near a lifeguard tower in case you get separated
  • Keep a small pouch for phones and car keys away from wet towels
  • Plan a shaded snack break every hour, not just when children ask

Parking and Getting There Without Stress

At JBR, parking is typically available in the underground and multi-storey car parks serving The Beach and the surrounding towers, with hourly charges that are usually reduced or validated when you spend in participating outlets. Keep receipts and ask before you order. Spaces fill quickly from late afternoon on weekends, so arriving early or using the Dubai Tram to Jumeirah Beach Residence stations and walking can be calmer than circling for a space with tired children.

For La Mer, parking arrangements and rates have varied as the site has evolved, so check official information before setting out. Parking nearby can be limited at peak times, and a taxi drop-off can be worth it if you are carrying a lot.

Food, Toilets and the End of the Day

Both areas have plenty of family dining, from burgers and pizza to Arabic grills and cafes where sandy feet are nothing unusual. Ordering early, around 11.30am, avoids queues when toddlers are hungry. Public toilets and outdoor showers are typically available near the main entrances at JBR, though queues build at sunset. A quick rinse and dry clothes can prevent the classic overtired meltdown on the drive home.

Done well, a La Mer or JBR day does not need to be expensive or exhausting. Pick the beach that matches your family’s energy, go early, create your own shade, pack more water than you think you need, and leave while everyone is still happy. That is usually the secret to wanting to go again next weekend.
