When family come to visit you in Dubai, shopping is almost always part of the trip β gold, electronics, perfumes, gifts for everyone back home. What many visitors do not realise until the airport is that tourists may be able to claim a refund of the VAT they paid on eligible purchases made in the UAE. The system is straightforward once you know the steps, but it does need to be set up in the shop, at the moment of purchase. Retrospective claims for receipts without the proper tag are generally not possible, so share this guide with your visitors before their first shopping trip, not after.
Who Can Claim and How the Scheme Works
The UAE tourist VAT refund scheme is operated by Planet, often referred to as Planet Payment, as the authorised operator working with the Federal Tax Authority. In broad terms, it is for visitors who are not residents of the UAE, who meet the scheme’s eligibility conditions, and who are taking the goods out of the country. Residents cannot claim a refund on their own everyday shopping, even if they are travelling soon, and there are rules around age, residency status and the type of goods. Because eligibility details can change, visitors should confirm the current conditions on Planet’s official channels or the Federal Tax Authority’s guidance before relying on a refund for a large purchase.
VAT in the UAE is typically charged at the standard rate on most retail purchases, but the refund you receive is not necessarily the full VAT amount β administrative fees are deducted, and Planet sets out how the refund is calculated. Treat any refund as a welcome bonus on shopping you wanted to do anyway, rather than building a purchase decision around an exact refund figure.
In the Shop: Getting the Tax-Free Tag
The most important step happens at the till. Shop only at retailers that participate in the scheme β look for tax-free shopping signage or ask before you buy β and tell staff before payment that you want a tax-free purchase. The visitor will need to present their original passport, and in some cases travel details, so the retailer can issue a tax-free tag attached to the receipt and linked to that passport. Purchases usually need to meet a minimum spend per receipt to qualify, which is commonly stated as around AED 250, but visitors should confirm the current threshold at the time of purchase.
- Use the same passport for every tax-free purchase throughout the trip
- Keep each receipt together with its tax-free tag, unfolded and undamaged
- Keep goods unused and in their packaging if the scheme requires it for inspection
- Ask whether large items must stay in hand baggage or checked baggage for validation
- Do not pack tagged goods deep in a suitcase you cannot open easily at the airport
At the Airport: Validation Before You Fly
On departure, visitors must validate their tax-free tags at a Planet validation point at the airport, port or border crossing before checking in or passing through, following the signage for the terminal they are flying from. At Dubai International and other major airports there are staffed counters and self-service kiosks. Arrive earlier than usual β validation can involve showing the passport, boarding details, receipts, tags and sometimes the goods themselves, and queues build up before popular flights.
Once validated, the refund can typically be taken to the original payment card, in cash within set limits, or through other options Planet offers at the time. Card refunds are not instant and may take some days to appear, so keep the validation receipt until the money arrives. If a tag is rejected, ask staff politely what the issue is β a mismatched passport, a missing tag or goods that cannot be shown are common reasons, and some problems can be resolved on the spot if you have time.
Helping Your Visitors Get It Right
As the resident host, your best help is simple organisation: a folder for tax-free receipts, a reminder not to use purchases before departure until they know the inspection rules, and a plan to reach the airport with spare time. With the tag done properly in the shop and validation left unhurried, your family’s shopping can end with a genuine saving rather than a missed opportunity.
