Dubai does not have a cold winter, but many residents still own winter coats, boots, thick blankets, carpets, and delicate items brought from home or used for travel. Storing them badly in Dubai’s heat and humidity can lead to mould, musty smells, insect damage, and faded or cracked materials. With apartments often short on cupboard space, it helps to prepare items properly before they go away for months. This guide explains how to clean, pack, and store winter and delicate belongings so they come out fresh and ready to use.
Why Dubai Humidity Is a Problem
Humidity is highest in summer and can build up indoors when air conditioning is off or a spare room has poor airflow. Moisture trapped in fabric feeds mould and mildew, while heat can dry out leather and damage glue on shoes and bags. Bathrooms, closed wardrobes against outside walls, and rooms without ventilation are common trouble spots. Balconies are rarely suitable because of dust, strong sun, and humidity changes.
Dubai Municipality provides general guidance on healthy indoor environments and waste and pest control, which is useful background if you are dealing with mould or insects at home. If you find extensive mould in a rented property, tell your landlord or maintenance company rather than just covering it up.
Clean Everything Before It Goes Away
Never store items dirty. Body oils, perfume, food marks, and dust attract insects and can set as stains over time.
- Wash or dry-clean winter clothes following the care label, and let them dry completely, ideally for a full day indoors
- Vacuum carpets and rugs on both sides, clean any spots, and dry them flat before rolling
- Wipe leather boots, bags, and belts with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then condition leather if the maker recommends it
- Empty pockets, unfasten tight zips and buttons on delicate garments, and remove belts from loops to avoid stretching
- Air items in an air-conditioned room, not in direct harsh sun, which can fade colours
If an item already smells musty, deal with it before storage. Sun and air may help lightly, but a professional clean is safer for wool, silk, and large carpets than repeated home washing.
Choosing the Right Storage at Home
Breathable storage works better than sealing everything in ordinary plastic, which can trap moisture. Cotton garment bags are good for coats and dresses, and clean cotton sheets make useful wraps for blankets and carpets. Vacuum bags save space for bulky duvets and ski jackets, but avoid using them for long on down, leather, silk, or embellished items, as compression can damage fibres.
For carpets, roll rather than fold where possible, with the pile facing inwards, and wrap in breathable fabric. Store raised off the floor on a shelf in case of a leak or AC drip. Keep heavy items at the bottom and delicate items on top.
Protecting Against Mould, Insects and Smells
- Use moisture absorbers or silica gel packs in cupboards and boxes, and replace or recharge them as instructed, as they stop working once full
- Open storage cupboards occasionally and run the air conditioning or a dehumidifier in very humid weeks
- Consider cedar blocks or lavender sachets for a fresher smell, replacing them when the scent fades, but do not rely on them alone to stop moths
- Keep storage areas clean and free of food, cardboard scraps, and clutter where pests can hide
- Check stored items every month or two for damp patches, insects, or smells, especially in summer
Avoid mothballs and strong chemical products in homes with children or pets unless the product is approved for domestic use and you follow the label exactly. If you find an infestation, isolate the affected item in a sealed bag and seek advice from a licensed pest control company.
When to Use Self-Storage
If you have large carpets or winter wardrobes for a whole family, a climate-controlled self-storage unit may be safer than a hot spare room. Prices vary by size, location, and contract length, so treat any quote as approximate and confirm what is included, including access hours, insurance, and air conditioning. Ask whether the unit is truly climate-controlled all day, not just ventilated, and visit before you sign.
Label every box with its contents and the date packed, and keep a simple list on your phone. With a clean start, breathable packing, and regular checks, your winter and delicate items can survive Dubai’s humidity in good condition, ready for your next trip or the cooler months ahead.
