How to Stay Safe From Online Scams in the UAE

By DXB TALK ·

Online scams are a global problem, and the UAE is no exception. Fraudsters use fake messages, calls, websites and offers to trick people into sharing personal details or sending money. The good news is that most scams follow familiar patterns — and once you recognise them, they are much easier to avoid.

The warning signs

Pause whenever you encounter any of these:

  • Urgent pressure: "act now or your account will be closed."
  • Unexpected prizes, refunds or job offers that ask you to pay a fee first.
  • Messages claiming to be from a bank, government department or delivery company, asking you to click a link or share a code.
  • Requests for passwords, one-time codes or remote access to your device.
  • Deals that seem far too good to be true — they almost always are.

Legitimate organisations rarely ask for sensitive details by message or call, and they never rush you into acting without thinking.

Habits that protect you

  • Never share passwords or verification codes with anyone, for any reason.
  • Type website addresses yourself rather than clicking links in unexpected messages.
  • Check sender details carefully — small spelling changes in names and addresses are a common trick.
  • Use strong, unique passwords and turn on two-step verification where available.
  • Keep your devices and apps updated, as updates often fix security weaknesses.

If something feels wrong, stop. It is always better to verify through an official channel — a bank's published number or an organisation's official website — than to respond in the moment.

If you think you have been targeted

Do not panic, but act quickly: change affected passwords, contact your bank if money or card details were involved, and report the incident through the official reporting channels available in the UAE. Reporting helps protect others too, since scams are often run in waves against many people at once.

Staying safe online is mostly about slowing down. Scammers rely on haste and trust; a few seconds of scepticism defeats most of their tricks.
