How to Sponsor Your Family for UAE Residence Visas: Salary Rules and Steps Explained

By DXB TALK ·

For many people, getting settled in Dubai only feels complete when family can join them. The UAE does allow residents to sponsor their spouse and children for residence visas, and thousands of families go through the process every year. It involves paperwork, attestations, and a sequence of steps in the right order — but it is well-trodden ground. Here is how it generally works, and what to prepare before you start.

Who You Can Sponsor

A resident with a valid UAE residence visa can generally apply to sponsor their spouse and children, subject to the official criteria in force at the time. Rules also exist for sponsoring parents and, in some circumstances, other dependants, but those categories typically carry stricter conditions and higher financial requirements. Age limits and conditions can apply to sons and daughters — for example for children who are studying — and these details are updated from time to time.

Because eligibility rules change, treat any summary — including this one — as a map rather than the final word. Confirm your family’s situation with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai, or the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), before you book flights around an assumed outcome.

The Salary Requirement — Check the Current Figure

To sponsor family members you must earn above a minimum salary threshold set by the authorities. Historically, the rules have referred not just to basic salary but in some cases to salary plus accommodation, or an accommodation allowance provided by your employer, and the way the threshold is applied can differ depending on whom you are sponsoring.

Thresholds and how they are calculated do change, and older figures on forums and in expat guides may no longer be accurate. Do not plan around a number from an old post. Check the current requirement, and what counts towards it, directly with GDRFA or ICP, and be ready to evidence your income with documents such as:

  • Your employment contract and a recent salary certificate from your employer
  • Recent bank statements, if requested, showing regular salary credits
  • Your own Emirates ID, passport, and current residence visa

The Documents You Will Usually Need

Family sponsorship is document-heavy, and getting the paperwork right first time is the biggest favour you can do yourself. You will generally be asked for attested marriage and birth certificates — attestation usually means certification in your home country, often followed by UAE embassy attestation there and further attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs after arrival, plus legal translation into Arabic where required. Start attestation early; it is often the slowest part of the process.

Authorities also commonly ask for proof of suitable housing, which in Dubai often means a registered tenancy contract — Ejari — in the sponsor’s name. Passports for each family member and recent photographs meeting official specifications complete the usual bundle. Requirements vary, so confirm the exact list for your case before gathering originals.

The Steps, in Order

Although details vary, the sequence for family members who are outside the UAE generally looks like this:

  • Entry permit: An entry permit is applied for first, allowing your spouse or children to enter the UAE for the purpose of taking up residency
  • Entry and status change: Once they arrive, their status is changed from entry permit to resident — family members already inside the UAE may instead change status without leaving
  • Medical fitness test: Adults — and in practice those aged 18 and over — undergo the medical fitness screening required for residence
  • Emirates ID and residency: Biometrics and Emirates ID applications follow, and the residence visa itself is now generally issued electronically and linked to the Emirates ID

Fees apply at each stage, and a refundable deposit may be required for certain categories. Timings depend on document readiness and application volumes, so build in a buffer.

Making It Go Smoothly

Most delays come from small things: a name spelled differently across documents, a certificate attested in the wrong order, or a tenancy contract that is not yet registered. Check every document name-by-name before submitting, keep scans of everything, and consider using an Amer centre or reputable typing centre to check and submit the application — their fee can be worthwhile for a first sponsorship. Above all, verify salary thresholds, fees, and eligibility on official GDRFA and ICP channels when you apply. With that confirmed, bringing your family to Dubai is a process you can work through step by step.
