On a six-hour stopover you can comfortably leave Dubai International Airport (DXB), ride the Metro to Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall or the Creek, see one headline sight and be back with time to spare β as long as your passport gives you visa-free entry or a visa on arrival, or you have arranged a transit visa in advance through your airline.
Quick facts
- Minimum sensible stopover: 6 hours between flights; 7β8 hours is more relaxed
- Where: DXB Terminals 1 and 3 have Metro stations; Terminal 2 needs a taxi
- Cost guide: Metro day spend typically under AED 25, plus food and one attraction
- Visa: Rules depend on nationality β check ICP / GDRFA guidance and your airline before you travel
Step by step: your six-hour plan
- Check your entry eligibility before you fly. Many nationalities receive visa on arrival in the UAE, others must pre-arrange a 48-hour or 96-hour transit visa via their airline or a UAE travel agency. Never assume β confirm on the UAE government portal or with Emirates / flydubai if you are flying with them.
- Travel light through the airport. If your bags are checked through to your final destination, keep just a small day bag. If not, store luggage at DXB (see below) so you are not dragging cases on the Metro.
- Clear immigration via Smart Gates if you can. Registered residents and eligible visitors can use Smart Gates at DXB for a faster exit. Join the regular queue early if you are not eligible β immigration is the biggest variable in your timing.
- Take the Red Line Metro into the city. From Terminal 3 (Emirates) or Terminal 1, ride to Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall (about 25 minutes) for Downtown, or to Al Fahidi / Baniyas Square for Old Dubai and the Creek. Buy a Nol card at the station or tap with a compatible card where accepted.
- Follow a tight loop. Hours 1β2: arrive Downtown, walk Dubai Mall and the fountain lake. Hour 3: Burj Khalifa exterior, Souk Al Bahar and coffee. Hour 4: early meal. Alternative loop: abra across the Creek for AED 1, Gold and Spice Souks, Al Fahidi lanes. Pick one area only.
- Head back 2.5 hours before departure. Be on the Metro back to DXB no later than 2.5 hours before your onward flight, collect any stored bags, and go straight through security. If traffic or queues worry you, take a taxi back β budget 25β40 minutes depending on time of day.
Visa rules in plain English
Your right to leave the airport depends entirely on your passport. Citizens of GCC countries enter freely. Many European, UK, US and other passport holders get a free visa on arrival. Others β including many South Asian and African passport holders without a qualifying residence or visa β need a transit visa arranged before arrival; airlines such as Emirates and flydubai offer 48-hour and 96-hour transit visas when you book, for a fee, typically around AED 180β260 depending on type β check your airline for the current fee and eligibility. If you are not eligible to enter, stay airside: DXB has lounges, a hotel inside Terminal 3, sleep pods, shops and restaurants to fill the time safely.
Always carry your onward boarding pass or booking, passport with at least six months’ validity, and any hotel or return details immigration may ask for.
Luggage storage and freshening up
DXB offers left-luggage in Terminals 1 and 3 arrivals areas, charged by size and per 12- or 24-hour block β typically around AED 35β65 per item per period; check the boards at the airport for the current fee. In the city, Dubai Mall and major hotels sometimes hold bags for guests and shoppers, and private storage services operate near Deira and Downtown. Airside, you can shower in lounges or the Dubai International Hotel, and free rest zones exist in Terminal 3 concourses β useful if you decide not to enter the city.
Costs in AED for six hours
A lean stopover can cost very little: Nol travel typically around AED 15β25, an abra ride AED 1 each way, a casual meal AED 40β80, and coffee AED 18β25. Taxis from DXB start with an airport surcharge β a ride to Downtown typically around AED 60β85. The expensive mistake is a pre-booked attraction you have no time to enjoy; on six hours, keep paid entries to one at most, and only if you booked a timed slot that fits.
Common mistakes
Trying to see both Old Dubai and Downtown. Choose one cluster. Underestimating the return. Check-in and security cut-offs are firm even if you already have a boarding pass. Exchanging lots of cash. Cards are accepted almost everywhere; carry just AED 100β200 in small notes. Ignoring heat. From May to September, midday walking is brutal β favour the Metro, malls and the Creek abra shade, and carry water.
FAQ
Can I leave DXB on a 5-hour layover?
It is possible but tight, and only sensible if you are eligible for quick entry, your bags are checked through, and you stick to one nearby area such as Deira and the Creek. For Downtown, 6 hours is the safer minimum.
Do I need a visa just to change planes?
No β if you stay airside in transit you do not need a visa. You only need entry permission (visa-free, on arrival, or a pre-arranged transit visa) if you want to pass immigration and enter the city.
What if my onward flight is from Terminal 2?
Terminal 2 (flydubai and other carriers) has no Metro station. Use a taxi between terminals and the city, and add extra buffer β inter-terminal transfers at DXB go by road and take time.
