How to Sell Your Car in Dubai: RTA Transfer, Valuation and Paperwork

By DXB TALK ·

Selling a car in Dubai is refreshingly fast when your paperwork is in order — the ownership transfer itself can take less than an hour. What slows sellers down is almost never the transfer. It is the unpaid fine discovered at the counter, the bank loan that has not been formally cleared, or the buyer whose insurance is not yet in place. This guide walks through the whole process in the order that avoids those problems: value the car properly, clear everything attached to it, then complete the RTA transfer cleanly.

Work out what your car is actually worth

Start with evidence, not hope. Check asking prices for the same model, year, mileage, and specification on the major UAE car listing platforms, remembering that asking prices sit above selling prices. Get at least one instant valuation or trade-in offer from a dealer or a car-buying service; that number is your floor, because you can almost always achieve it with no effort. Private sales usually bring more money in exchange for your time — viewings, questions, and negotiation. Condition and history matter more in Dubai than in cooler markets: a full service history and evidence of regular maintenance reassure buyers.

Before advertising, spend a little to earn a lot. A thorough wash and interior clean, fixing cheap cosmetic faults, gathering the spare key, manuals, and service invoices, and taking bright, honest photos will lift both your price and your enquiry rate.

Clear the loan, fines, and tolls first

A car with an active bank loan cannot simply be sold as if it were fully yours; the loan must be settled and formally cleared, and the bank must release the vehicle in the system before the transfer can proceed. If a buyer is involved in paying off the loan, use the bank’s official process and get the clearance in writing — do not rely on verbal assurances from anyone.

Next, check for outstanding traffic fines against the car and your file, and settle them; unpaid fines block the transfer. Your Salik toll account is linked to you and the plate, so plan to remove or deactivate the tag arrangement for the sold vehicle and settle any balance, following the current Salik process.

The RTA ownership transfer, step by step

  • Agree the price and arrange for the buyer to have valid insurance in their name for the car; the transfer cannot be completed without it.
  • Both buyer and seller attend an authorised RTA customer happiness centre or vehicle testing and registration centre together. If either party cannot attend, the absent party normally needs a legal power of attorney arranged for a representative — confirm the current accepted format before relying on it.
  • Bring the Emirates ID of both parties, the seller’s driving licence details, and the vehicle’s registration card (Mulkiya). The car’s registration must be valid or renewed as part of the process, which may require the vehicle to pass its technical test if it is due.
  • The official checks the file, confirms fines are cleared, and processes the transfer. Fees apply for the transfer, new registration, and any new plates; amounts change from time to time, so check the current RTA fees before you go.
  • The buyer receives the new Mulkiya in their name. Number plates are handled as part of the process: plates may be surrendered, replaced, or a special plate number retained or transferred under RTA rules if you arrange it.

After the handshake: insurance and loose ends

Once the car is no longer yours, contact your insurer to cancel the policy in your name. If the policy has unused months and you have not claimed, you may be entitled to a partial refund under the policy terms. Keep copies of everything from the sale: the transfer confirmation, the buyer’s details, and any written agreement you both signed about price and condition. Never hand over the car, keys, and documents in exchange for a promise to transfer later or a payment method you cannot verify; the safe sequence in Dubai is payment and official transfer together, at the centre, the same day.

Sell in the right order — value it honestly, clear the loan and fines, arrive with insurance and documents ready — and what looks like a bureaucratic chore becomes one of the smoother admin jobs in Dubai. Transfer requirements and fees are set by the RTA and can change, so confirm the current process and charges on official RTA channels before your visit.
