Dubai does not work quite like countries where you must register with one GP surgery and stay there for years. Here, your health insurance network is what shapes your choices: you pick clinics covered by your policy, register your details with the ones you like, and book as needed. That freedom is convenient, but it can feel confusing when you first arrive and just want a doctor for a cough, a check-up or a referral. This is how to set yourself up properly.
Start With Your Insurance Network
Before choosing a clinic, download your insurer’s network list or open their app and search for general practice or family medicine clinics near your home or workplace. Turning up at a clinic outside your network usually means paying in full yourself, except in a genuine emergency. If you are on a basic Essential Benefits Plan, your choices will be narrower and may be centred in particular areas, so check distances carefully.
Shortlist two or three clinics. Look at opening hours β many Dubai clinics open into the evening and on weekends, which helps around work β plus parking or Metro access, languages spoken, and whether they have in-house laboratory and pharmacy services. Recommendations from colleagues in your building or community group are often more useful than star ratings alone. Confirm the current network status with the insurer or clinic, as networks change during the year.
How Registration Usually Works
Registration is typically quick and is often completed at your first visit or through the clinic’s app, website or WhatsApp booking line. You will usually need:
- Your Emirates ID, which most clinics use to verify your insurance eligibility
- Your insurance member details or policy information, if separate from your Emirates ID record
- Your passport, mainly if your Emirates ID is still being issued
- Basic contact details, including a UAE mobile number for appointment reminders and results
- A summary of existing conditions, regular medicines and allergies, if you have them
The clinic will create a medical file for you. If you plan to use Dubai Health public primary healthcare centres instead, the process runs through Dubai Health channels and a Health Card may be relevant β check the current requirements on its official app or website. Private clinics do not normally charge a separate registration fee, but confirm if any consultation or file-opening charge applies and what your insurance co-payment will be, typically a percentage of the consultation fee on basic plans.
Booking and Attending Your First Appointment
Most clinics let you book online, by phone or through an app, and many keep some same-day slots for urgent minor illness. When booking, say briefly what the appointment is for, as the clinic may allow a longer slot for a full check-up or multiple concerns. Arrive around 10 to 15 minutes early for your first visit to finish registration and the insurance eligibility check.
During the appointment, the GP can examine you, order blood tests or scans, prescribe medicines, issue a sick note where appropriate, and refer you to a specialist if needed. On many insurance plans, specialist care requires a GP referral first, so do not skip this step and book a specialist directly unless your policy allows direct access. Ask how results will reach you β commonly through an app, patient portal, SMS or a follow-up call β and how repeat prescriptions are handled.
Building a Relationship With One Clinic
Although you are free to use different network clinics, there are real advantages to returning to the same GP where possible. Your records, test history and medication list stay in one place, the doctor gets to know your background, and follow-ups are smoother. If you move home across the city, you can register at a new clinic and ask for your records or a summary to be shared, with your consent.
Keep a simple personal note of your clinic name, your GP’s name, your insurer’s helpline and your policy expiry date. Store digital copies of key results and vaccination records yourself rather than assuming every clinic system talks to every other one.
Once you have one trusted clinic in your network and your file is open, everyday healthcare in Dubai becomes straightforward: book, show your Emirates ID, pay any small co-payment, and focus on getting better rather than paperwork.
