How to Prepare for a Used-Car Inspection

By DXB TALK ·

A used car can be excellent value — or an expensive mistake. The difference usually comes down to the inspection. Whether you check the car yourself or hire a professional, knowing what to look for protects you from the most common problems.

Before you see the car

Start with research. Check the model's reputation for reliability, common faults and servicing costs. Ask the seller for the service history, accident history and reason for selling, and be cautious if answers are vague or documents are missing.

Arrange to see the car in daylight and, ideally, to have it inspected by an independent mechanic. A professional inspection costs far less than most repairs, and a seller who refuses one is giving you important information.

What to check on the day

Work through the car systematically:

  • Bodywork: look for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, rust and signs of repair.
  • Tyres: check tread depth, matching brands and signs of uneven wear.
  • Interior: test every switch, seat adjustment, air conditioning and electronic feature.
  • Engine bay: look for leaks, worn belts and unusual smells, and check fluid levels.
  • Documents: confirm the registration, ownership and service records match the car in front of you.

Then take a proper test drive: city streets, a highway stretch, and a quiet road where you can listen for unusual noises. Test the brakes, steering and gearbox at different speeds.

After the inspection

If the inspection reveals minor issues, use them to negotiate fairly — or walk away if the problems are serious. Get any agreement in writing, verify registration and transfer requirements with official sources, and never pay in full before the paperwork is complete.

A careful inspection takes an hour or two. It can save you years of regret.

Finally, trust your instincts as well as the checklist. If something about the car or the seller feels wrong, even after a clean inspection, there is no harm in walking away and continuing your search elsewhere.
