How to Plan a Picnic in Dubai Desert Parks and Lakeside Spots in Winter

By DXB TALK ·

Winter is picnic season in Dubai. From roughly November to March, cooler mornings and evenings make it possible to sit on the grass, walk by a lake, or watch the sun set over the desert without the intense heat of summer. Whether you prefer a desert park on the edge of the city or a lakeside spot with a skyline view, a little planning makes the day relaxed, safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Picking the Right Spot for Your Group

Dubai has a wide choice of public parks managed by Dubai Municipality, as well as desert and lakeside areas that are popular in winter. Think first about who is coming. Families with small children usually do best in an enclosed park with toilets, shade, play areas and short walks from parking. Groups of friends may prefer a lakeside area with open views and space for games.

Check park rules before you go. Entry fees for public parks are usually modest, often only a few dirhams per person, but amounts are approximate and can change, so confirm the current fee and payment method — many parks use the Nol card or an app-based system. Also check whether barbecues are allowed, and if so, only in designated areas. Some lakeside and nature areas, especially around protected habitats, do not allow fires, drones, or swimming at all.

When to Go and What the Weather Does

Timing matters even in winter. Mornings are fresh and quiet, ideal for breakfast picnics and walking. Late afternoon into sunset is the most popular time, so arrive early for parking and a good shaded spot. Midday can still be warm in direct sun, particularly in March.

Check the forecast from the National Center of Meteorology before you leave. Winter in the UAE can bring occasional rain, strong winds and fog, especially early in the morning. A windy day is uncomfortable in open desert areas where sand blows across food and mats.

What to Pack for Comfort and Safety

  • Shade and seating: A picnic mat, light folding chairs, and a pop-up shade or umbrella if your spot has little tree cover.
  • Food and water: More drinking water than you think you need, plus ice packs to keep salads, dairy and cooked food cool.
  • Sun protection: Sunscreen, hats and sunglasses — winter sun is still strong.
  • Practical extras: Tissues, wet wipes, hand sanitiser, a small first aid kit, bin bags, and a phone charger.
  • Warm layers: A light jacket for after sunset, when desert temperatures can drop quickly.

Keep food simple and safe. Sandwiches, fruit, flatbreads, dips and grilled items prepared at home travel well. Avoid leaving perishable food in a warm car, and eat chilled items within a few hours. If you plan to barbecue where it is permitted, bring your own equipment, keep it on designated stands, and make sure coals are fully out before you leave.

Getting There and Respecting the Rules

Many parks are reachable by car with nearby parking, while some central parks are also accessible by metro, bus or taxi. If you drive to a desert area, stay on established tracks unless your vehicle and experience are suitable for sand, and never drive into restricted or fenced conservation areas. Dubai Municipality and Dubai Police regularly remind visitors to follow park regulations, keep noise reasonable, and respect other families.

Dogs are not allowed in many public parks and beaches, so check the specific rules for your chosen location rather than assuming. Reading the signs at the entrance takes a minute and prevents most problems.

Leaving the Place Better Than You Found It

The best picnic groups are the ones nobody notices afterwards. Take all rubbish with you or use the bins provided, including food scraps that attract birds and stray animals. Do not feed wildlife at lakes or in desert areas, as human food can harm them and change their behaviour.

Plan a simple rhythm: arrive, settle in shade, eat early while food is fresh, walk or play during the coolest part of your visit, and pack up before dark if you are somewhere without lighting. With the right spot, sensible packing and respect for the rules, a winter picnic in Dubai is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to enjoy the season with family and friends.
