A picnic is one of the simplest pleasures of Dubai’s cooler months. From Zabeel Park and Al Mamzar to Safa Park and Creek Park, residents spread blankets, share food and let children run while the weather is kind. Planning well matters here, though: barbecue rules are strict, shade goes quickly on weekends, and some activities need permission. With a little preparation, you can enjoy a relaxed afternoon without fines, smoke complaints or a long hunt for a decent spot.
Choosing Your Park and Checking the Rules
Start by picking a park that fits your plan. Large parks managed by Dubai Municipality, such as Zabeel Park, Al Mamzar Park and Mushrif Park, offer lawns, play areas and, in designated zones, barbecue facilities. Neighbourhood parks are lovely for a simple blanket picnic but often have no cooking facilities at all. Entry fees, where charged, are typically modest per person, and some parks charge for vehicles β check the Dubai Municipality website or park signage for current fees and opening hours, as these change.
Permits are not usually needed for a small family picnic with ready-made food. You are more likely to need prior approval for large gatherings, organised events, sports tournaments, commercial photography or bringing in structures such as large gazebos. If your group is big or you are celebrating with decorations and extra equipment, contact Dubai Municipality in advance and ask what is allowed, rather than assuming and being asked to pack up on the day.
Barbecue Rules You Must Follow
This is the area where visitors most often go wrong. In Dubai parks, barbecuing is only allowed in designated barbecue areas, using the provided pits or stands β never directly on the grass, under trees, or on a disposable barbecue placed on the lawn. The rule protects the grass, prevents fires and keeps smoke away from other families. Lighting a barbecue outside the designated zone can lead to a fine and will certainly lead to a conversation with park staff.
- Use only designated barbecue pits in the marked cooking areas
- Never light fires on grass, sand in non-designated areas, or under tree canopies
- Bring charcoal, utensils and a bag for ash and rubbish β facilities vary by park
- Let coals cool fully and dispose of them only where the park directs
- Keep raw and cooked food separate, and keep perishables in a cool box in the heat
If your chosen park has no barbecue zone, plan a no-cook picnic instead: sandwiches, salads in sealed boxes, fruit, pastries and flasks of karak travel brilliantly and involve no smoke, no waiting and far less washing up. Many experienced Dubai picnickers prefer it.
Finding Shade and Timing Your Visit
Shade is the real currency of a Dubai picnic. On winter weekends, the best tree-shaded spots near play areas and barbecue zones are often claimed by late morning. Arrive early β around opening or before 11am for a lunch picnic β and choose a spot with natural shade for most of your stay, rather than relying on a small umbrella in strong sun. In the warmer shoulder months, late afternoon picnics work better: arrive after around 4pm, enjoy softer light, and stay into the early evening when parks are at their most pleasant.
Bring more water than you think you need, sunscreen for reapplying, hats for children, and a light layer for evenings from December to February, when it can feel cool once the sun drops. A large blanket, a spare bin bag and wet wipes solve most picnic problems before they start.
Leave the Park Better Than You Found It
Dubai’s parks stay beautiful because staff and visitors both look after them. Take all rubbish to the bins, or home if bins are full, keep music at a volume your neighbours can escape, and respect prayer areas, planted beds and any sections roped off for maintenance. Supervise children on play equipment and around water features, and keep dogs in mind: many public parks do not allow dogs, so check rules before bringing one.
Plan the park, respect the barbecue zones, chase the shade early and pack for the season, and a Dubai picnic becomes the easiest outing in your family calendar. For the latest park rules, fees and facilities, check Dubai Municipality sources before you go.
