How to Pass Your Vehicle Inspection First Time: A Tasjeel Centre Checklist

Use this Tasjeel checklist to pass first time: lights, tyres, brakes and leaks checked, plus fees, timings and what to do if your car fails.

You pass your vehicle inspection first time at a Tasjeel centre by fixing the small, cheap things beforehand — lights, tyres, wipers and leaks — because most failures in Dubai are for simple defects, not major mechanical problems. The test itself takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and a ten-minute check at home the day before can save you a retest fee and a second trip.

Quick facts

  • Where it happens: Tasjeel, Shamil, Wasel and other RTA-approved testing centres across Dubai
  • When you need it: Every year at registration renewal for most vehicles; new cars are usually exempt for the first years — check your renewal notice
  • Cost: The test fee is typically around AED 170 — check the RTA app or DubaiNow for the current fee; a retest costs less if done within the allowed window
  • Time needed: Plan 45–90 minutes in total including queuing; the inspection itself is about 20–30 minutes
  • What to bring: Your Emirates ID and the vehicle registration card (Mulkiya); the car must be clean enough for the chassis number to be read

How to pass first time, step by step

  1. Do a home check a day or two before. Walk around the car with a friend: check every light, tyre, mirror and the horn using the checklist below. Fix anything simple straight away.
  2. Clear your fines and check renewal requirements. Outstanding traffic fines and an expired insurance policy will block your registration renewal, so check on the RTA app or DubaiNow and arrange insurance in advance.
  3. Wash the car, especially underneath. Testers need to read the chassis (VIN) number and check for oil leaks. A car caked in sand or leaking oil onto the pit floor is hard to pass.
  4. Book or just drive in. Many centres accept walk-ins, but booking through the RTA website or app cuts waiting time, especially at month-end and on Saturday mornings.
  5. Hand over the car at the test lane. You wait in the customer area while a technician drives your car through the bays: brakes, suspension, emissions, lights alignment and a visual body check.
  6. Collect your report. If you pass, you can complete registration renewal online or at the centre and get your new Mulkiya. If you fail, the report lists exactly what to fix.
  7. If you fail, repair and retest promptly. Get the listed faults repaired and return within the retest window stated on your report so you only pay the lower retest fee.

Tasjeel centre checklist: what testers actually check

Lights and signals. Headlights (low and high beam), indicators, brake lights, reverse lights, number-plate light and hazards must all work, and headlight aim is measured by machine. One blown bulb is enough to fail.

Tyres and wheels. Tread must be legal, tyres must not be cracked, bulging or older than the permitted age, and all four (plus size) should match the specification. Dubai heat perishes rubber, so check the sidewalls carefully.

Brakes and suspension. The car goes on rollers that measure braking force and balance, and suspension play is checked. Spongy brakes, pulling to one side or knocking sounds usually mean a pre-test garage visit.

Emissions and engine. Exhaust smoke — especially blue or thick black smoke — and high emissions readings are common fail points on older cars, along with visible oil or coolant leaks.

Body, glass and safety basics. Windscreen cracks in the driver’s view, missing mirrors, a broken seatbelt, an illegal window tint beyond Dubai’s permitted limit, a noisy modified exhaust or a chassis number that cannot be read will all cause problems.

Common mistakes that waste a trip

Turning up with unpaid fines or without arranging insurance first means you cannot finish renewal even with a pass. Another classic is arriving with a warning light on the dashboard — testers notice engine and airbag lights immediately. Finally, do not ignore the small stuff: a dead number-plate bulb, a torn wiper blade or an empty washer bottle looks minor at home but is recorded as a defect on an official report.

If your car is older or high-mileage, a short pre-inspection at a trusted garage is money well spent. Ask them to check specifically for leaks, brake balance, emissions and tyre age — the four things that fail Dubai cars most often in summer.

FAQ

How long does a Tasjeel test take?

The inspection itself is about 20 to 30 minutes. With queuing and paperwork, allow 45 to 90 minutes, and avoid month-end peaks if you can.

What happens if my car fails the inspection?

You get a report listing the defects. Repair them and return within the retest period shown on the report for a reduced retest fee; after that window you may pay the full fee again.

Can I renew registration online after passing?

Yes. Once the pass is recorded and insurance is active, most owners complete renewal in the RTA app or on DubaiNow and have the new Mulkiya delivered or printed at a centre.
