Linking Your Emirates ID to Your Driving Licence, Vehicle and Bank Accounts: A Practical Checklist

By DXB TALK Β·

Your Emirates ID is more than an identity card in Dubai β€” it is the key that connects your driving licence, your car, your bank accounts and many government services. When details do not match across systems, small jobs turn into frustrating trips: a licence renewal stalls, a fine goes to an old mobile number, or a bank asks you to visit a branch in person. This checklist helps you link everything properly and fix mismatches before they cause a problem.

Start With the Basics: One Name, One Mobile, One Record

Before you link anything, check that your details are identical everywhere. Your name should appear on your Emirates ID exactly as on your passport, and that same spelling should be used by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), your bank and your telecom provider. Even a middle name in one system and missing in another can create a mismatch.

The mobile number matters most of all. One-time passwords for UAE PASS, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), RTA services and banking apps are usually sent to the number registered against your Emirates ID. If you changed SIM cards when you arrived, update it first. You can typically do this through ICP services, an Amer centre, or the UAE ICP app, usually needing the physical card and a code sent to the new number.

Linking Your Driving Licence and Vehicle With the RTA

In Dubai, licence and vehicle records sit with the RTA and are built around your traffic file number, tied to your Emirates ID. Your traffic file was created when you first applied, and every vehicle you register, Salik tag and fine is associated with it.

To check the link, sign in to the RTA website or Dubai Drive app using UAE PASS and confirm you can see your licence, vehicles and any fines in one place. If a car is missing, or a sold car still shows, visit an RTA Customer Happiness Centre with your Emirates ID and vehicle registration card, known as the Mulkiya, and ask staff to reconcile the traffic file. Keep these points in mind:

  • Renew your Emirates ID before it expires β€” an expired ID can block licence and vehicle registration renewals.
  • Update the RTA whenever you change your mobile number, so fine notifications and renewal reminders reach you.
  • Make sure the name on the Mulkiya matches your Emirates ID exactly, especially after a passport renewal.
  • Check Salik and parking accounts separately, as they may hold an older number even when your main RTA profile is correct.

Linking Your Emirates ID to Your Bank Accounts

Banks must keep a valid Emirates ID on file for every account holder, a process often called KYC, or Know Your Customer. When your ID is renewed, update its records β€” many banks let you scan the new card in their app, or update through online banking, an ATM, or a branch. Do not ignore the reminders: if the ID on file expires, banks can restrict transactions or freeze online access until the new copy is provided.

When you open an account, the bank links it to your Emirates ID number from day one. If you hold accounts with more than one bank, update each one separately, as there is no single central update covering all banks. Joint accounts and supplementary cards may each need their own update, so ask the bank to confirm every relationship under your ID is current.

Using UAE PASS as Your Daily Link

UAE PASS is the national digital identity that ties many services together. Once it is verified against your Emirates ID β€” usually by scanning the card and completing face verification in the app β€” you can use it to sign in to ICP, GDRFA Dubai, RTA and DubaiNow without separate passwords.

If UAE PASS shows an old mobile number or fails verification, fix the underlying Emirates ID record first rather than retrying the app. A verified UAE PASS also lets you store digital copies of your ID and licence, handy when a service asks for uploads.

A Simple Order to Work Through

Tackle the links in this order: first confirm the mobile number registered with ICP, then verify UAE PASS, then check your RTA traffic file, and finally update every bank. Keep scans of your Emirates ID, passport and licence in one secure folder so each update takes minutes. Revisit this whenever you renew your ID, change your number or sell a car.
