How to Find a Reliable Handyman in Dubai: Apps, Building Rules and Fair Pricing

By DXB TALK ·

A leaking tap or a wall that needs drilling can become a headache in Dubai if you do not know who to call or what your building allows. Reliable help is available, from app-based services to technicians recommended by neighbours, but quality and pricing vary. Knowing how to choose and what to agree before work starts will save time and money.

Check Your Building Rules First

Before booking anyone, check your building or community management rules. Many buildings require approval or a work permit for drilling, plumbing or electrical work, and some require the technician’s details to be registered at security before access. Noise is another restriction: drilling is often limited to certain hours and days, and may not be permitted on weekends or public holidays in some communities.

If you rent, check your tenancy agreement and speak to your landlord or agent. Some repairs are the landlord’s responsibility, particularly for major systems, while minor fixes may fall to the tenant. Clarifying this avoids paying for work someone else should cover.

Apps, Companies and Community Recommendations

App-based services are a popular way to book handymen, electricians and plumbers in Dubai. In general, these platforms offer upfront booking, set time slots and a record of the job, which suits newcomers. Community recommendations are the other main route: neighbours often share names of technicians they have used repeatedly.

Neither route guarantees quality. With an app, check recent reviews, what is included and what happens if you need a follow-up. With a recommendation, ask what work was done and whether they would be used again. For specialist jobs, an established company may be better than a general handyman, particularly for electrical or major plumbing work.

Get a Written Quote Before Work Starts

Always agree the scope and price in writing before work begins, even if it is only a message that clearly lists the job, the materials included and the total cost. Vague verbal estimates are where most disputes start. If a technician needs to inspect the problem first, agree any call-out or inspection charge in advance and ask whether it is deducted from the final bill if you proceed.

  • Describe the problem clearly and share photos in advance where helpful
  • Confirm whether materials are included or charged separately
  • Ask who supplies parts, and whether you can approve a part before it is fitted
  • Confirm how long the job should take and when the worker will arrive
  • Ask what guarantee, if any, applies to the work and for how long

Per-Job Versus Hourly Pricing

Handyman work is commonly priced as a fixed fee per job or at an hourly rate. A fixed price works well for defined tasks such as hanging shelves or fixing a lock, because you know the total in advance. Hourly pricing may suit a list of small jobs in one visit, but the final cost is less predictable.

Judge fair pricing in relative terms: get more than one quote for larger jobs, compare what is included rather than just the headline figure, and be cautious of quotes dramatically lower than others. The most expensive option is not automatically the best; clear communication and punctuality are often better indicators of value.

Supervising the Work at Home

Be present, or have a trusted person present, while work is carried out. Protect floors and furniture near the work area, and check progress before fittings are sealed in place. If extra problems are found, ask to see the issue and agree any additional cost in writing before it goes ahead.

Keep children and pets away from the work area, and do not be afraid to pause a job if something looks unsafe. A professional technician will expect reasonable supervision and questions.

Paying and Following Up

In general, pay the balance after work is completed and checked: test taps, switches, doors and fittings before the technician leaves. Keep the invoice, guarantee details and photos for your records. If a problem reappears, contact the provider promptly. Once you find people who do good work and charge fairly, keep their details safe for next time.
