How to Enrol Your Child in a Dubai School: A First-Timer’s Guide for New Residents

New to Dubai with kids? How school enrolment works: curricula, KHDA ratings, the documents you need, transfer certificates, assessments and contracts.

If you have just moved to Dubai with children, here is the reassuring news: enrolling in a school is a well-trodden path, and thousands of families do it every term. The essentials are a valid residence visa and Emirates ID for you and your child, attested documents from your home country, and a transfer certificate if your child is already school-age. Places at popular schools fill early, so the real secret is timing. This guide takes you through the whole process in order.

Step 1: Understand the System Before You Choose

Dubai’s private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), which inspects schools and publishes ratings from Outstanding down to Weak. Schools follow different curricula — British, IB, American, Indian (CBSE/ICSE), French and others — and the curriculum you choose affects everything from the school calendar to how easily your child could transfer back home later. The school year for most curricula runs from late August/early September to late June/early July; Indian-curriculum schools start in April.

Age cut-offs matter in Dubai. Children are placed in year groups by age on a set date (commonly 31 August for British-curriculum schools), and the KHDA has firm rules on the minimum age for FS1/KG1 entry. Check the KHDA website for the current age requirements for your child’s birth date before falling in love with a school.

Step 2: Shortlist Schools the Smart Way

  • Location first: Dubai traffic is real. A school 15 minutes away beats a famous school 50 minutes away, every single school day, for years.
  • KHDA ratings and reports: Read the inspection summary on the KHDA website — it tells you far more than a brochure.
  • Curriculum fit: Match it to where your family may live next, and to your child’s learning style.
  • Fees: Tuition varies enormously and does not include uniforms, transport, meals and activities. Schools publish KHDA-approved fee structures; ask for the full schedule of extra charges before deciding.
  • Availability: Many popular schools run waiting lists. Apply to more than one school — applications are cheap compared with a missed term.

Step 3: Apply — Documents You Will Need

Each school’s application list varies slightly, but the standard set is:

  • Passport copies for the child and both parents
  • UAE residence visa copies and Emirates ID copies (schools can usually begin an application while visas are in process, and finalise once IDs are issued — ask the admissions office)
  • Child’s birth certificate — attested if requested
  • Recent report cards from the previous school (usually the last two years)
  • A Transfer Certificate / leaving certificate from the previous school for children entering Grade 2 / Year 3 and above — this is a KHDA requirement, and if you are arriving from outside the UAE it generally needs attestation by the education authority and UAE embassy in your home country, plus the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Start this early; it is the document that delays most families.
  • Immunisation/vaccination records
  • Passport photographs

Many schools also invite the child for an assessment or observation session — for younger children this is a gentle play-based session; older children may sit English and maths tests. It is normal practice in Dubai and nothing for your child to fear.

Step 4: Accept the Offer and Register with KHDA

When a school offers a place, you will sign a Parent–School Contract — a KHDA-standard agreement covering fees, refunds and responsibilities. Read the refund and re-registration clauses carefully. The school registers your child in the KHDA system, which is why Emirates IDs are ultimately required: your child’s enrolment is officially recorded once the ID is linked. Paying the registration deposit secures the seat; deposits are counted within KHDA-approved fee rules, and you should always receive receipts.

Step 5: Prepare for the First Term

  • Uniforms and books: Bought through the school’s appointed supplier; buy before the late-August rush.
  • Transport: Most schools run regulated bus services with trained attendants, booked termly. Alternatively, many families drive — check the school’s drop-off system, as it is tightly organised.
  • KHDA parent resources: The KHDA website and its school directory let you compare ratings, fees and curricula side by side at any point.
  • Settling in: Most Dubai schools are expert at mid-year arrivals and run buddy systems and parent introductions. Attend the orientation — you will meet the other new families who become your first social circle.

Common Questions from New Residents

Can my child start before our visas are stamped? Often, yes — many schools accept applications and even start children while residency is being processed, finalising KHDA registration once Emirates IDs arrive. Confirm with the admissions team.

What if we arrive mid-year? Dubai schools are used to it. Waiting lists move, and a mid-year start is routine, especially in January.

What if my child needs learning support or is gifted? Inclusion is a KHDA priority; schools must declare their provision. Ask directly about their inclusion team and any additional charges, which the KHDA regulates.

Which is the “best” curriculum? There isn’t one — there is only the best fit for your child’s next ten years. Choose for continuity with your likely future moves.

Start with location and curriculum, apply to a shortlist rather than a single dream school, and get the transfer certificate attested early. Do those three things, and enrolment in Dubai becomes a smooth, even exciting, part of the move. For the definitive rules on ages, documents and contracts, the KHDA website is the authority to check.
