How to Deal With Being Locked Out of Your Dubai Apartment: Lost Keys and Night-Time Steps

By DXB TALK ·

It usually happens at the worst moment: late at night, arms full of shopping, or just back from the airport, and you realise your keys are inside or lost. Being locked out is stressful, but common, and there are clear, safe steps you can take. Stay calm, prove you live there, and use your building’s official channels first.

First Steps in the First Ten Minutes

Start with the simple checks. Try every family member or housemate who may have a spare key, and check whether a neighbour, friend or domestic helper nearby holds one for emergencies. If you live in a house-share or family apartment, a quick call or message may solve the problem without any cost.

Next, check whether you lost the keys or left them inside, because that changes what you need. If a key is lost in public, you will want the lock changed, not just opened. If it is inside, a locksmith may open the door without damage. Do not force a window, climb a balcony, or break the lock yourself. Balcony climbing is extremely dangerous in high-rise buildings, and damaging a rented property can lead to repair costs.

Contact Building Security and Management

For most apartment buildings, your first official call should be to building security or the management office. Many towers have 24-hour security at reception who can contact maintenance, verify your tenancy, and in some cases open the door with a master system or call an approved locksmith for you.

  • Go to the security desk in person if you can, rather than relying on strangers in the corridor.
  • Be ready to show photo ID, such as your Emirates ID, and a copy of your tenancy contract or Ejari if you have it on your phone.
  • Explain clearly whether keys are lost or locked inside, and whether children, elderly relatives or pets are inside the apartment — that changes the urgency.
  • Ask if the building has a set call-out procedure or fee, as charges vary and are only approximate until confirmed.

If someone vulnerable is locked inside, or you smell gas or see flooding, treat it as an emergency and contact emergency services through official Dubai Police channels immediately. For non-urgent matters, Dubai Police and Dubai Land Department offer guidance through their official websites and apps.

Using a Locksmith Safely at Night

If management cannot open the door, you will likely need a locksmith. At night this is where people overpay. Ask for the total price before they travel, including call-out, opening, and any new lock, and confirm whether card payment is accepted. Prices vary by time, area and lock type, so treat any figure as approximate until assessed.

Use a licensed, well-reviewed company, ideally one recommended by your building management or real estate agent. Avoid handing over ID or paying in full before the door is open. A good locksmith will ask you to prove you live there before opening the door — that is a good sign, not an inconvenience. Once inside, get an invoice or receipt, especially if you plan to claim the cost or discuss it with your landlord.

Landlords, Agents and Who Pays

In rented homes, who pays depends on why you were locked out. If you lost your keys, you will usually cover the locksmith and any lock change yourself. If the lock itself failed or the key snapped because the mechanism was worn, tell your landlord or agent as soon as possible and keep photos and receipts, as maintenance responsibility may be different. Check your tenancy contract for maintenance clauses, and refer to the Dubai Land Department and its Rental Dispute Settlement Centre guidance if you and your landlord disagree.

If your keys are truly lost, change the lock promptly and tell building security, especially if the key could be linked to your address.

Prevent It Happening Again

  • Leave a sealed spare key with a trusted friend or family member nearby.
  • Take a photo of your tenancy and ID documents and keep them securely on your phone.
  • Save your building management and agent contacts before you need them at midnight.
  • Consider a key tracker for your main set, and a fixed routine by the front door.

Getting locked out is miserable, but with building help, proof of tenancy and a careful choice of locksmith, most people are back inside safely within the hour.
