How to Deal With a Flat Tyre in the Dubai Heat: Roadside Help and Safety Steps

A flat tyre is inconvenient anywhere, but in Dubai it can quickly become a safety issue. High temperatures, fast traffic and wide motorways mean you must think about heat and visibility as much as the tyre itself. Get passengers out of harm’s way first. Changing a tyre comes second, and often the best decision is not to change it yourself.

Pull Over Safely and Make Your Car Visible

If you feel a pull to one side, hear a thudding sound or see a tyre pressure warning, ease off the accelerator and avoid braking sharply. Signal early, check your mirrors and move gradually to the nearest safe place: a parking bay or side street in town, or the hard shoulder on a motorway, as far from traffic lanes as possible.

Switch on your hazard lights as soon as you stop, engage the parking brake and turn off the engine if you will be waiting. If it is safe to get out, place your warning triangle behind the vehicle at a good distance so approaching drivers have time to react.

  • Slow down gradually rather than braking suddenly
  • Stop as far from moving traffic as possible
  • Use hazard lights straight away
  • Place the warning triangle only if you can do so safely

Move Away From Traffic and Beware the Hard Shoulder

The hard shoulder on a Dubai motorway is a dangerous place to stand. Traffic passes at high speed and a stopped vehicle offers little protection. If you leave the car, exit on the side away from traffic, help children out on that side, and move everyone well away from the road, ideally behind a barrier.

Never stand between your car and the traffic, and never linger at the rear where another car could strike it. Do not cross a motorway on foot or walk along the hard shoulder looking for help. Stay near your vehicle, but at a safe distance from the lanes.

Protect Yourself From the Heat

Heat is the second emergency. Dehydration can develop faster than people expect, especially for older passengers, children and anyone exerting themselves. Move into shade if any is nearby and still safely away from traffic, sip water slowly if you have it, and avoid standing on very hot tarmac for long.

Keep a basic kit in the car: bottled water, a hat, sunscreen, a charged phone and a reflective vest. If anyone feels dizzy, nauseous, confused or stops sweating, treat it as urgent, call 999 and follow the operator’s instructions.

Call for Roadside Help Instead of Taking Risks

Calling for help is often the safest option, particularly on a motorway, at night or in extreme heat. Check what your insurer provides, as many motor policies in the UAE include roadside assistance for towing, battery help, fuel delivery and flat tyres. Patrol and recovery services also operate across Dubai in general, with the warning lights, equipment and experience to work safely at the roadside.

When you call, describe your location precisely: road name, direction of travel, nearest exit or landmark, plus your car make, colour and registration. Say how many passengers are with you and whether anyone is unwell, then wait in your safe place and keep your phone free. Use 999 only for a genuine emergency, such as a collision, injury, fire or medical problem. For a straightforward breakdown with no one hurt, your insurer or roadside provider is normally the right first call.

If You Change the Spare Tyre Yourself

Only change the tyre yourself if you are on a flat, firm surface well away from traffic, you know how to use the jack and tools, and conditions feel safe. If any of those is missing, wait for help. Keep passengers at a safe distance, and never put any part of your body under a car supported only by a jack.

A spare, especially a compact temporary spare, is for short, slower journeys to a tyre shop, not normal driving. Check its condition and pressure regularly, because a spare that has sat unused in a hot boot for years may not be reliable. Drive gently afterwards and have the original tyre repaired or replaced promptly.

Afterwards: Checks That Prevent a Repeat

Have the damaged tyre inspected, check the pressure and condition of the other tyres, and look for uneven wear. Low pressure is a common cause of failure in hot weather, so checking pressure when tyres are cold helps. Restock your water and save roadside assistance details in your phone.
