Buying baby gear in Dubai needs extra thinking. Alongside usual safety checks, you have intense heat for much of the year, fine dust, air-conditioned malls, and a mix of smooth pavements and sandy edges. A crib, stroller and car seat that suit a cooler climate may need closer scrutiny here. Use recognised standards, plan for temperature, and choose items you can clean and carry easily.
Start With Recognised Safety Standards
Look for clear, recognised international safety marks on the product, box and manual, rather than relying only on a shop description or listing. Reputable gear is tested for stability, strength, harness performance and materials, and labelling should say which standard it meets. In the UAE, product standards are overseen through official bodies including ESMA, now part of MOIAT, so check current UAE requirements through official sources before buying, especially imports. If a product has no mark and no instructions you can follow, walk away.
Car Seats and Travel in the Car
UAE rules are strict about young children in cars and change from time to time. As a general guide, children under roughly four should travel in a proper child seat, and children under roughly ten should not sit in the front seat — but check RTA guidance and current traffic law for exact ages and penalties. Choose a seat that fits your child by weight and height, fits your car, and installs tightly every time. Rear-facing travel for as long as the seat allows is widely recommended. Practise installation early, keep the harness snug without bulky clothing underneath, and never use a seat with an unknown accident history.
Managing Heat, Sun and Parked Cars
Never leave a baby alone in a parked car, even for a minute with a window open, because cabin temperatures rise very quickly in Dubai. Cool the car first and check buckles and seat surfaces are not hot to touch. Breathable fabrics and mesh panels help, and a fitted, ventilated sun shade is better than draping a thick blanket over the top, which traps heat. Plan walks for early morning or evening in summer.
- Choose light, breathable fabrics that can be removed and washed
- Check buckles and plastic surfaces for heat before every journey
- Use a ventilated shade, never a heavy cover blocking airflow
- Check the back seat every time you lock the car
Strollers for Pavements, Malls and Sand
One stroller here must handle polished mall floors, kerbs, uneven pavements and occasional sand near beaches or parks. Larger wheels and decent suspension cope better with kerbs and rough ground; very small wheels suit smooth indoor surfaces. Look for a reliable brake, a five-point harness, a stable frame that does not tip when a bag hangs from the handle, and a fold you can manage one-handed while holding the baby. Test the fold in the shop and check it fits your car boot and lift.
Crib Safety at Home
For sleep, simple is safest. Choose a sturdy crib with fixed sides, slats spaced narrowly enough that a baby cannot trap their head — roughly no more than a small drinks-can width apart, following the maker’s stated standard — and a firm mattress fitting snugly with no gaps at the edges. Keep soft bedding, pillows, bumpers and loose toys out of the sleep space, and place the baby on their back. Lower the base, or stop using the crib, as instructed once your child can climb. Keep it away from blind cords, heaters and direct air-conditioning draughts.
New, Second-Hand and Keeping Gear Clean
Dubai’s second-hand market can save money on a crib frame or stroller, provided all parts, screws and instructions are present and nothing is broken or recalled. Car seats are the exception: buy new, or accept one only from someone you trust with a known, accident-free history, an unexpired date and a complete manual, because damage is not always visible. Dust settles quickly, so choose washable covers, wipe frames and wheels after park trips, vacuum car seat crevices, and store spare gear indoors away from balcony heat.
There is no single perfect set of gear, only gear that is certified, correctly used and suited to life here. Check the standards, respect the heat, test how things fold and clean, and confirm current car seat rules with RTA or official UAE sources. Then you can focus on exploring Dubai together, safely and comfortably.
