How to Check If Your Health Insurance Is Valid for a DHA Licence Renewal

By DXB TALK ·

Renewing a professional licence through the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) usually requires proof of valid health insurance. It sounds simple, but renewals stall because a policy has lapsed, the dates do not align, or the cover on file does not match the person applying. Checking everything a few weeks early saves a last-minute scramble and keeps you legally able to work.

Why Insurance Matters for a DHA Licence Renewal

Dubai requires all residents to hold compliant health insurance, and healthcare professionals are no exception. When you renew through the DHA’s Sheryan system, your details are checked against your residency and insurance status. If your policy has expired, is not yet active, or is registered under different details, the renewal may not proceed until the mismatch is fixed.

This is separate from malpractice or professional indemnity insurance, which some professions also need for licensing. Do not confuse the two. Your personal health cover protects you when you are the patient; indemnity cover relates to your practice. Some employers arrange both, but never assume — check what you hold and what your facility holds for you.

Step-by-Step Checks to Do Before You Apply

Start around a month before your licence expiry date, so there is time to renew or correct a policy if needed:

  • Find your current policy certificate and note the insurer, policy number, start date and expiry date
  • Confirm the name, Emirates ID number and date of birth on the policy match your documents exactly
  • Check the policy is active today and will still be active on your licence renewal date
  • Log in to your insurer’s app or portal and download a current certificate or member card
  • Ask your employer’s HR or PRO to confirm the policy they hold for you, if they arranged it
  • Check Sheryan on dha.gov.ae for your licence status, expiry date and any listed requirements

A common trap is a gap between jobs. If you changed employer, your previous policy may have been cancelled and the new one may start later than you think. Another is a policy that renews on a different cycle to the licence. Line up the dates rather than relying on memory.

How to Verify Your Cover Is Really Active

A PDF certificate alone is not always proof that a policy is live. Insurers sometimes issue documents before payment clears, and policies can be cancelled if an employer or sponsor does not complete payment. The safest checks are to log in to the insurer’s member portal, use their app to confirm active status, or call the insurer and ask them to confirm cover against your Emirates ID.

You can also ask a network clinic to run an eligibility check, as clinics verify insurance before treatment. If a clinic system shows you as inactive, treat that as an early warning and contact the insurer straight away. Keep screenshots or a written confirmation with the date, in case HR needs it.

If you bought an Essential Benefits Plan or another basic policy yourself, confirm it is from a DHA-approved insurer and that it is registered for Dubai. Cover bought for another emirate may not satisfy Dubai requirements in the same way, so check on dha.gov.ae rather than assuming any UAE policy will do.

What to Do If Something Is Wrong

If your policy has lapsed, renew it or buy a new compliant policy immediately and allow time for it to show as active in insurer systems — this is typically a few working days, but confirm the timeline with the insurer. If your personal details are wrong, ask the insurer for an endorsement or corrected certificate; small spelling differences in names can cause verification problems.

If your employer is responsible for your insurance and it has lapsed, raise it with HR in writing and keep a copy. You should not have to quietly pay for cover your employer is obliged to provide, though some professionals choose to arrange interim cover to protect their licence timeline. Get advice from HR or the DHA before paying twice.

Once your insurance shows as active and your documents match, complete the renewal in Sheryan and keep the approval and payment receipts together. A half-hour of checking a month early is far easier than trying to fix an expired policy on the day your licence runs out.
