When a family member you sponsor β a spouse, child or parent β is leaving the UAE for good, cancelling their residence visa properly is just as important as issuing it was. If a dependant’s visa is left active after they have moved abroad, it can block your own visa renewal, create confusion at immigration, and lead to fines once the visa expires while the holder is outside the country. The good news is that cancellation is straightforward through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) or the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai, especially if you plan the timing before the final flight.
When and Why You Need to Cancel
As sponsor, you are responsible for your dependants’ visas. A residence visa should be cancelled when the holder is leaving permanently, moving to a visa under a new sponsor such as an employer, or changing to a different visa category. If your own employment visa is being cancelled because you are also leaving, your dependants’ visas must normally be cancelled first, before your employer can complete your own cancellation.
Timing matters because a residence holder who stays outside the UAE for an extended period β typically around six months, though you should confirm the current rule on icp.gov.ae β may find the residence is no longer considered valid. Cancelling cleanly before departure avoids that grey area and gives your family member a clear immigration record if they ever return on a visit or a new residence visa.
Documents You Will Usually Need
Requirements can vary slightly depending on whether you apply online or in person, but you will typically be asked for:
- Your passport and Emirates ID as the sponsor
- The family member’s passport and Emirates ID
- The family member’s residence visa details
- A completed cancellation application, submitted through ICP, GDRFA or an Amer centre
- In some cases, proof related to the departure, depending on whether the person is inside or outside the UAE
Fees for a dependant visa cancellation are typically modest compared with the original visa cost, but confirm the current amount on the ICP or GDRFA portal before you apply, as government fees are updated from time to time. Keep digital copies of everything.
How to Apply: Online, Amer or Typing Centre
Many sponsors in Dubai complete the cancellation through the ICP smart services portal or app, or through the GDRFA Dubai system, by selecting the residence cancellation service for a sponsored family member and paying online. If you prefer help in person, an Amer centre in Dubai can submit the application for you β often the quickest route if your case has a complication, such as a lost Emirates ID or a family member who has already left.
Cancellation when the person is already outside the UAE can be possible, but the rules and supporting documents differ, and a longer absence may affect what is required. If your family member has already departed without cancelling, contact ICP or visit an Amer centre promptly rather than waiting until the visa expires. Once approved, save the cancellation confirmation. The Emirates ID is typically invalidated as part of the process, so your family member should not try to use it for travel or banking afterwards.
Loose Ends to Tie Up Before Departure
Visa cancellation works best as part of a wider leaving checklist. Before the final exit, consider closing or updating the family member’s bank accounts, mobile phone plan and subscriptions in their name, returning a health insurance policy where a refund may apply, and settling school records if a child is leaving a Dubai school. If your family member holds a UAE driving licence or a car in their name, deal with transfer or sale before departure, as these are much harder to resolve from abroad.
Also check future travel plans. After cancellation, your family member will need the correct visit visa or visa-on-arrival eligibility if they want to come back to Dubai for a holiday, so do not assume they can re-enter on the cancelled residence.
Handled in the right order β dependants first if you are leaving too, documents ready, and confirmation saved β cancelling a family member’s residence visa is a short administrative job that closes their time in the UAE cleanly and protects both of your records for the future.
