Dates are not a seasonal extra in Dubai. They are on the table at Iftar, offered with coffee when you visit someone’s home, given as gifts during Ramadan and Eid, and sold everywhere from Deira souks and neighbourhood grocers to polished date boutiques in the malls. The choice can be baffling at first: soft or firm, stuffed or plain, local or imported, loose by weight or boxed like chocolates. A little knowledge of varieties and grades will save you money and stop good dates going sticky in the cupboard.
The Varieties You Will See Most
Medjool are the large, soft, caramel-rich dates many people know first, usually imported and priced accordingly. They are wonderful for desserts and breaking fast, but they are not always the best choice.
- Khidri are large, dark and moderately sweet, with a chewy skin; a popular all-rounder for gifting.
- Safawi are deep-coloured, soft and rich, often sold as a premium everyday date.
- Ajwa, from Madinah, are smaller, dark and distinctive, and typically among the more expensive.
- Kholas are golden, toffee-noted and classically served with Arabic coffee.
- Lulu and Fard are common local and regional varieties, often better value for daily eating.
- Sukkari are crisp-sweet and pale, almost crunchy when fresh, loved by those who find soft dates too rich.
Taste before you commit to a large box where tasting is offered, especially in souks and specialist shops. Two dates with similar names can differ a lot by harvest, origin and how they have been stored.
Understanding Grades and Prices
Price reflects size, uniformity, softness, blemishes and presentation as much as flavour. Premium grades are large, even, unbroken and carefully packed; lower grades may be smaller or mixed but taste perfectly good for cooking, smoothies and daily snacking. For your own table, a mid-grade loose date from a busy shop with fast turnover often beats a beautiful gift box that has sat around.
Stuffed and coated dates, filled with candied orange peel, nuts or covered in chocolate, are gifts and treats rather than a measure of date quality. Buy a small selection first. Likewise, very cheap dates in a market are not automatically a bargain if they are dry, fermented-smelling or full of damaged fruit. Check a few from the top and, politely, glance at what is underneath.
Ask where the dates are from and when the harvest was, if the shop can tell you. Good sellers in the Deira markets, at the date souk area near the fish market, and in specialist stores are used to these questions and will steer you by sweetness and texture if you describe how you plan to serve them.
Buying Loose, Boxed or for Gifting
Buying loose by weight suits residents. You can mix two varieties, buy a modest amount that will actually be eaten, and return for fresh stock. Keep the bag sealed on the way home and transfer the dates out of thin market plastic the same day.
For gifts, presentation matters and Dubai does it brilliantly, from simple local boxes to elaborate trays. If the gift is travelling, choose firmer varieties and a sturdy sealed box, and check airline and destination rules only if you are carrying unusual quantities; ordinary boxed dates are a routine souvenir. Stuffed dates should be eaten sooner than plain ones, so they suit a gift that will be opened promptly rather than stored for months.
Storing Dates at Home
Dates keep well, but not forever and not anywhere. Store plain dates in an airtight container away from heat and strong smells. In a cool pantry they typically hold for some weeks; in the fridge they keep considerably longer, although very soft varieties can firm up and should come back to room temperature before serving. For longer storage, freezing works well for plain dates, thawed slowly in the fridge overnight.
Watch for white crystallised sugar on the skin, which is common and harmless, versus mould, a sour or alcoholic smell, or very hard dried-out fruit, which mean the dates are past their best. Keep stuffed and chocolate-coated dates according to their packaging and eat those first.
Start with two varieties, one soft and one firm, served with unsweetened coffee. Within a week you will know your household’s favourite, and buying dates will feel easy.
