Open a ride app in Dubai and you will usually see three choices: a Hala taxi, a Careem car, or an Uber. All can get you from Dubai Marina to Downtown or Deira to the airport, but they are not the same product, and the best option changes with the time of day, your location, and whether you travel with children. This comparison explains how each works for residents, so you choose deliberately instead of tapping whichever car looks closest.
What Each Service Actually Is
Hala is the booking service for Dubai’s official RTA taxis, the cream-coloured cabs you can also hail on the street. Booking Hala through the Careem app orders a regulated, metered taxi at the official tariff. That is often its strength: taxi drivers know the city, cabs use ranks at malls, hospitals and stations, and supply is plentiful.
Careem’s own cars, beyond Hala, are private hire vehicles booked in the app, in categories at different price points. Uber offers a similar private hire service, typically from standard cars to larger and premium options. Category names change, so check what the app actually offers in your area.
Pricing: Meter Versus Upfront Fare
A Hala taxi runs on the official meter: a flagfall plus a per-kilometre rate, with extra charges possible for airport pickups, tolls and waiting. Traffic can raise the final cost, but there is no demand surge. Confirm the current tariff on rta.ae, as rates change and vary for airport and pre-booked rides.
Careem and Uber private cars typically show an upfront or estimated fare, based on demand, distance and time. At quiet times it can be very competitive. At peaks, after events at Coca-Cola Arena, or in rain, dynamic pricing can make the same trip cost noticeably more than a metered taxi. Salik and airport fees may be included or added, so read the fare breakdown before confirming.
- Hala: regulated metered fare, plus street hails and taxi ranks
- Careem or Uber cars: upfront price and choice of car category

Airport Pickups at DXB and DWC
At Dubai International, official taxis are simplest for many arrivals: follow signs to the rank at Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and take the next cab. The airport flagfall is typically higher than a street pickup, larger vehicles are usually available, and marshals keep queues moving late at night. After a long flight, that system is hard to beat.
Careem and Uber pickups at DXB use designated areas, which change as the airport reorganises roads and parking. Follow in-app instructions for your terminal, go to the marked zone, and check the plate and driver name before getting in. Never accept rides touted inside the terminal. At DWC, Al Maktoum International, distances are longer and cars thinner, so pre-book or allow extra time. Check your app’s airport guidance on the day.
Child Seat Rules for Parents
UAE law requires young children to be properly restrained, in a child seat where required, and not in the front seat below the permitted age. Confirm exact age thresholds and current penalties through official UAE and RTA sources, because parents are responsible for compliance. Do not assume a taxi or private car carries the right seat unless you booked that option.
Careem has at times offered a kids category with a car seat in Dubai, but availability varies by area and time. Hala taxis do not routinely carry child seats. Families with babies typically bring their own travel seat, book a category that explicitly includes one, or use their own car. Allow time to fit the seat properly, and never hold a baby loose on a motorway trip.
Which Should You Use?
For most residents, the answer is all three, for different trips. Keep Careem for Hala and Careem cars, and Uber to compare prices and waiting times, especially at peaks and the airport. Use Hala for straightforward city rides, private cars for space, comfort or an upfront fare, and plan child seats in advance, not at the kerb. Check app fares and the tariff on rta.ae, and you will rarely overpay in Dubai.
