Get Your Degree Certificate Attested for UAE Jobs: Common Mistakes That Cause Delays (And How to Avoid Them)

Avoid the degree attestation mistakes that delay UAE job offers, from wrong order of stamps to name mismatches, missing originals and bad copies.

Most UAE employers and visa authorities will not accept a foreign degree at face value — it must be attested in a strict chain, usually in your home country first and then by the UAE, and one stamp in the wrong order can send the whole file back to the start. Understanding that chain before you hand over your original certificate is what separates a two-week process from a two-month ordeal that puts a job offer at risk.

The Attestation Chain, in the Right Order

For most countries the order is the same in principle: verification or education authority in the country that issued the degree, then that country’s foreign affairs ministry, then the UAE embassy or consulate there, and finally the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) after you arrive. Some countries use an apostille system for some documents, but UAE employment files commonly still require the embassy and MOFA steps, so follow the exact route for your issuing country rather than a friend’s.

Employers ask for attestation because the work permit and, for some roles, professional licensing depend on a verified qualification. Teachers, healthcare workers and engineers face extra equivalency or licensing steps on top of attestation, so ask your employer early whether you also need a Ministry of Education equivalency certificate.

  • Original degree certificate — copies alone are rarely attested
  • Mark sheets or transcripts, if your country or employer requires them attested too
  • Passport copy, and UAE visa or entry permit copy if you have one
  • Authorisation letter if an agent or relative submits on your behalf
  • Any prior verification letters, such as university verification for certain countries

Mistake 1: Starting in the Wrong Country or Wrong Order

The most expensive error is attesting in the UAE first or skipping the home-country foreign ministry step. Stamps must follow the chain; a MOFA stamp cannot fix a missing embassy legalisation, and you may have to courier the original back home and begin again. Equally, do not laminate your original certificate — laminated documents are frequently refused because stamps and security checks cannot be applied properly.

Another trap is attesting a photocopy or a provisional certificate when the authority requires the final awarded degree. If your convocation is pending, tell your employer immediately and agree what interim proof they can accept, rather than spending money attesting a document that will be rejected later.

Mistake 2: Name Mismatches and Damaged Originals

The name on your degree, passport and university records should match. If you changed your name after marriage or by deed poll, carry the legal change document and be ready to show it at each stage. Even a differing middle initial can trigger queries in systems that match records automatically.

  1. Photograph both sides of your original certificate before it leaves your hands.
  2. Check every spelling, date and university detail against your passport.
  3. Confirm your country’s exact sequence on the UAE embassy and MOFA guidance pages.
  4. Use a tracked courier or a reputable attestation company with a written receipt listing your document.
  5. Keep copies of each stamp as it is added, so you can prove progress to your employer.
  6. Complete the final MOFA attestation in the UAE through its official portal or app once the embassy stamp is in place.

Mistake 3: Trusting the Wrong Agent or Timeline

Attestation agents are common and many are legitimate, but never hand an original degree to anyone without a trade licence, a written quote and a receipt. As a guide, a full chain typically takes around two to four weeks and total costs — official fees, couriers and agent charges combined — are often in the range of AED 800 to AED 2,500 depending on country and speed, but treat that purely as an estimate and check current official fees on the MOFA portal and embassy pages before you pay.

Tell your employer a realistic timeline on day one. Most experienced UAE HR teams know attestation takes time; what frustrates them is silence followed by a surprise delay the week your visa should be filed. Weekly updates with photos of completed stamps keep your offer safe.

FAQ

Do all jobs in the UAE need an attested degree? Roles where the permit or licence depends on a qualification usually do, and many employers require it for any degree-level position, so assume yes unless HR confirms otherwise in writing.

Can I attest my degree after arriving in the UAE? Only the final MOFA step happens in the UAE; the home-country and embassy steps must be completed where the degree was issued, or through an agent acting there for you.

Is attestation the same as equivalency? No. Attestation proves the document is genuine; equivalency is a separate Ministry of Education assessment of how the qualification compares to UAE standards, required for some professions.
