GDRFA Return Permit for Residents Abroad for Over Six Months: Steps and Evidence

By DXB TALK Β·

If you hold a Dubai residence visa and have been outside the UAE for more than six months, you generally cannot simply board a flight and re-enter as if nothing happened. In most cases you need a return permit approved before you travel. For Dubai-issued visas this is handled by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs β€” Dubai, known as GDRFA. The permit shows there is a genuine reason for the long absence and a sponsor who still supports your return. Arranging it a few weeks ahead, rather than at the airport, makes the process far less stressful.

Who Needs a Return Permit and Who Does Not

As a general rule, a residence holder who stays outside the UAE for more than 180 continuous days needs approval to return, because the long absence can make the residency inactive for entry. Some categories are typically treated differently β€” Golden Visa holders, for example, may be able to remain abroad for longer without a permit. Visas issued in another emirate are usually handled through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, known as ICP, rather than GDRFA. Check the file number on your visa if you are unsure who issued it, and confirm your category on gdrfa.gov.ae before assuming you are exempt, because airlines check your status before boarding.

Note that a return permit is not a renewal: if your residence expired while you were abroad, your sponsor may need a new entry permit instead. An Amer centre can usually tell the difference quickly.

What Evidence You Need to Prepare

The strength of the application is usually the reason for the absence, explained clearly and backed with documents. GDRFA typically asks why you stayed away β€” medical treatment, studying abroad, work posted overseas by your UAE employer, or caring for a close family member β€” and expects evidence that matches the explanation. Keep it short, honest, and consistent across the form and attachments.

  • Passport copy, plus copies of your residence visa and Emirates ID
  • A letter from your sponsor or employer confirming they still sponsor you and support your return
  • Evidence for the reason: medical reports, a university enrolment letter, or an employer secondment letter
  • A recent photograph meeting the official specification
  • Entry and exit records or earlier correspondence that help explain the timeline

Documents in another language are easier to process with a clear translation. Upload clean, legible scans. If your sponsor is a company, it often submits the application, or uses an Amer centre on its behalf.

How to Apply, Step by Step

The application is typically made online through the GDRFA website or smart services, or in person through an Amer centre. The sponsor, or an authorised representative, logs in β€” often with UAE PASS β€” selects the return permit for residents outside the country for more than six months, enters your details exactly as they appear in your passport, states the reason for the absence, and uploads the evidence. Fees are typically around a few hundred dirhams, with service or typing charges possible depending on the channel, so check the live fee on the official portal before paying rather than relying on older figures shared online. Keep the reference number you receive for follow-up.

Processing often takes a few working days when the file is clear, but it can take longer if officers ask for more evidence. Watch the portal and your email, and reply with exactly what was requested. Once approved, the permit is issued electronically and linked to your passport. Approvals are typically valid for a limited window in which you must enter the UAE, so do not apply months before you can realistically fly, and book travel only after approval is confirmed.

After You Arrive Back in Dubai

Entering on the permit restores your normal residency position, but check in the first week that your entry was recorded correctly, whether your Emirates ID still needs renewal, and that your sponsor has updated their records. If renewal is due soon, start it promptly, including medical fitness testing if your category requires it. Keep copies of the permit and evidence for future long trips.

Long absences happen for human reasons β€” illness, family, study, work β€” and the return permit exists for exactly those cases. Give yourself time, gather honest evidence, and confirm current rules and fees on gdrfa.gov.ae before you apply. With approval in hand before you fly, a visa worry becomes a well-documented return home.
