FS1, FS2, KG and Grade Systems in Dubai Explained: Matching Ages to Year Groups

By DXB TALK ·

FS1, Year 1, KG2, Grade 3 — if you are new to Dubai, school year group names can feel like a code. Dubai has British, American, IB, Indian, and other curricula side by side, and each labels the same years differently. A child in FS2 in a British school might be in KG in an American or Indian school, at a similar age. This guide helps you match ages to groups.

The British system: FS1, FS2, then Year 1

In British schools, the Early Years Foundation Stage is split into FS1 and FS2, sometimes called Foundation Stage or Reception. Children typically start FS1 at around age three and FS2 at around age four, then move to Year 1 at around age five. From there, years run upwards: Year 6 is usually the last year of primary, Year 7 starts secondary, with GCSEs in Years 10 and 11 and sixth form in Years 12 and 13.

British schools in Dubai generally follow an autumn cut-off date for age on entry, but the exact date and any flexibility have been adjusted by regulators over time. Always confirm the current cut-off with the school and via KHDA at khda.gov.ae, rather than relying on a UK website, because Dubai follows UAE rules.

The American system: Pre-K, KG, then Grade 1

American schools usually use Pre-Kindergarten for younger children, then Kindergarten, often called KG, followed by Grade 1 at around age six. Elementary typically runs to Grade 5, middle school covers roughly Grades 6 to 8, and high school is Grades 9 to 12, ending with a diploma. A Dubai Kindergarten in this system is not a standalone nursery — it is the first formal school year, with literacy and numeracy expectations to match.

  • British FS1 broadly aligns with American Pre-K for younger children
  • British FS2 broadly aligns with American KG and Indian KG levels
  • British Year 1 broadly aligns with American Grade 1
  • British Year 7 broadly aligns with American Grade 6
  • British Year 13 broadly aligns with American Grade 12

These alignments are approximate guides, not official equivalences. When children transfer between curricula, schools assess reports and sometimes the child directly to place them where they will progress best.

Indian and IB systems: KG and PYP years

Indian schools in Dubai, following CBSE or ICSE, typically have Kindergarten years before Grade 1, and their academic year has traditionally started in spring rather than autumn, although arrangements vary by school. That different start can shift age comparisons by a few months, so ask for the school’s own age-to-grade table for the year you are applying.

IB schools offering the Primary Years Programme often use early years labels of their own, then PYP levels that align by age to the grades above. Admissions teams are very used to translating between systems and will tell you the equivalent group once they know your child’s date of birth and last class attended.

Why age cut-offs cause so much confusion

Two children born a few weeks apart can fall into different year groups if their birthdays sit either side of a cut-off date, and a summer-born child may be youngest in one system and mid-group in another. KHDA sets the framework for age requirements in Dubai private schools, and schools must apply it consistently. Exceptions outside the rules are limited and not guaranteed, so do not enrol assuming a move will be approved later.

If you are worried your child is very young or old for the group, talk to admissions about readiness and support, rather than focusing only on the label. Being settled socially and emotionally usually matters more in the early years than a few months of academic head start.

How to check the right group for your child

Start with your child’s date of birth, note their current class and curriculum, and ask each school for a written placement for that birth date in the entry year you want. Compare answers side by side, and check any doubt against KHDA guidance at khda.gov.ae. Keep previous report cards, as schools will ask for them.

The labels will soon feel familiar once your child starts. What matters most is not whether the door says FS2, KG, or Grade 1, but that your child is placed with similar-age children, taught at the right level, and happy each morning.
