Eye Tests and Glasses in Dubai: Opticians, Prescriptions and Checks for Children

By DXB TALK ·

Between intense sunlight, long screen hours and a lot of driving, your eyes work hard in Dubai. The good news is that eye care here is easy to access: high-street opticians in almost every mall, plus ophthalmologists in clinics and hospitals when something medical is involved. The confusing part is knowing who does what, how prescriptions work, and when a child needs more than a quick check before school. This guide walks through the options.

Optician, optometrist or ophthalmologist?

The titles matter because they decide what each professional can do. An optometrist is the clinician who typically carries out eye tests, checks vision and eye health, and issues prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses. Optical shops also employ dispensing staff who fit, adjust and repair glasses and advise on frames and lenses, but they do not test your eyes.

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor specialising in eyes, based in a hospital or clinic regulated by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). See one for eye pain, sudden vision changes, flashes and floaters, injuries, suspected infection, or conditions such as glaucoma or diabetic eye disease. An optometrist who spots a concern should refer you onward and explain how quickly you should be seen. Sudden loss of vision or serious injury is an emergency, not a routine booking.

How eye tests and prescriptions work

A standard eye test usually includes questions about your vision and general health, measurements of how each eye sees with and without lenses, a check of how the eyes work together, and a look at eye health, sometimes with pressure measurement or retinal imaging offered as an extra. Tests typically take around 20 to 40 minutes depending on what is included.

Your prescription is yours to keep. Ask for a copy showing sphere, cylinder and axis values for each eye, plus pupillary distance if you plan to order elsewhere. Prescriptions are usually current for around one to two years for adults, and shorter for children, and a reputable shop should suggest a retest rather than remaking strong lenses from a very old one. Contact lenses need a separate fitting and prescription from spectacles.

Costs vary. Some opticians offer free or discounted tests when you buy glasses, while hospital tests cost more but include a medical review. Insurance cover for routine tests and glasses is limited on many plans, so check your policy first.

Choosing glasses and lenses for Dubai life

Think about how you actually live before choosing. Useful options to discuss include:

  • UV protection, which matters year-round in the UAE sun, for both clear lenses and sunglasses
  • Prescription sunglasses or photochromic lenses if you drive a lot or spend time outdoors
  • Anti-reflective coatings for night driving and screen glare
  • Thinner, lighter lens materials for stronger prescriptions
  • A spare pair, especially for drivers and contact lens wearers
  • For children, flexible, durable frames and impact-resistant lenses that survive school bags and sport

Always ask what is included in the quoted price — lenses, coatings, fitting and adjustments — and what warranty covers frames, lens defects and prescription changes if you cannot adapt to new glasses.

Eye checks for children

Children rarely announce that they cannot see properly; they assume everyone sees as they do. Watch for squinting, sitting very close to screens, headaches, eye rubbing, one eye turning in or out, or a drop in reading confidence. Schools in Dubai carry out health screening that may include vision checks, but that does not replace a full eye test if you or a teacher has concerns.

Book a proper children’s eye test before starting school, and sooner if you notice the signs above or there is a strong family history of glasses or lazy eye. Young children do not need to read letters — optometrists use pictures, shapes and objective measurements. If a lazy eye is suspected, early referral matters because treatment is typically more effective in younger children. Confirm check intervals with your optometrist.

Eye care in Dubai is straightforward once you know the roles: optometrists for routine tests and prescriptions, ophthalmologists for anything medical, and prompt help for sudden changes. Keep a copy of your prescription, choose lenses for real Dubai life, and do not let children struggle in silence — a simple test can change how a child reads, learns and plays.
