If you live in the UAE — for work, family, study, or freelancing — one card matters more than any other: your Emirates ID. It is your official identity card, and you will need it for almost everything. Here is what every Pakistani resident needs to know about it.
What the Emirates ID is:
- The official identity card for all UAE residents, issued by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP).
- It contains your personal details, photograph, fingerprints, and a unique identity number.
- It is mandatory for residents. You cannot legally live in the UAE long-term without one.
What you use it for:
- Opening a bank account.
- Signing a tenancy contract and getting utilities connected.
- Getting a UAE driving licence and registering a vehicle.
- Accessing government services, healthcare, and schools.
- Proving your identity anywhere in the UAE — it is asked for constantly.
How Pakistanis get one:
- Your Emirates ID is issued as part of your residence visa process — work visa, family residence, student visa, freelance permit, Green Visa, or Golden Visa.
- The process: after your entry permit and arrival, you complete a medical fitness test, then attend a biometric appointment (fingerprints and photograph) at an ICP service centre.
- Your ID card is then issued, usually linked to the duration of your residence visa.
- Your employer, sponsor, or institution typically guides you through the steps — ask them for the exact schedule.
Important details:
- Keep your Emirates ID safe and carry it with you. Losing it means applying for a replacement, with a fee and a process.
- Your Emirates ID must be renewed when your residence visa is renewed. An expired ID causes problems with banks, landlords, and government services.
- If you change jobs, sponsors, or visa types, your Emirates ID details are updated through the new residence process.
- Children sponsored on your visa also receive Emirates IDs as part of their residence process.
Common mistakes:
- Confusing the Emirates ID with the visa itself. They are linked but different: the visa is your permission to reside; the ID is your identity card. You need both.
- Delaying the biometric appointment. Until your ID is issued, many services — including banking — are difficult or impossible to access.
- Not updating your details after a change of employer, address, or marital status. Outdated details cause complications later.
For visitors:
- Visit visa holders do not receive Emirates IDs — the card is for residents only. If you are visiting family or on a short trip, your passport and visa are your documents.
Your Emirates ID is the key to daily life in the UAE. Get it promptly when you arrive as a resident, keep it safe, and renew it on time — and life in Dubai runs smoothly.
