Abra Routes Beyond Baniyas: Al Jaddaf, Festival City and Creek Harbour Crossings

Most people know the classic abra crossing between Deira and Bur Dubai, the short hop across Dubai Creek that has carried residents for generations. But the Creek is longer than that famous stretch, and so is the modern abra network. Beyond Baniyas, RTA water transport links Al Jaddaf, Dubai Festival City and Dubai Creek Harbour, giving residents in newer communities a calmer, scenic way to cross the water. If you live east of the city centre, these routes can turn a routine trip into the best part of your day.

The Traditional Abra, Briefly

The wooden abra between Al Sabkha and Bur Dubai, and between Baniyas and Al Seef, remains the Creek experience everyone should try once. Those crossings are short, frequent and paid separately, traditionally with a very small cash fare. They are perfect for the Gold Souk, spice souks and Al Fahidi, but they are not the whole story. Newer stations further up the Creek connect growing residential districts that would otherwise rely entirely on bridges and busy roads.

A heritage abra is a quick hop that leaves when ready, while Festival City and Creek Harbour services work more like scheduled water buses, with timetables and Nol payment on many routes. Check which type you are taking in the S’hail app or on rta.ae, because fares and frequency differ.

Al Jaddaf: Gateway to the Upper Creek

Al Jaddaf, between the Creek and Al Garhoud and close to Culture Village, is one of the most useful stations in the network. From Al Jaddaf Marine Transport Station, routes connect towards Dubai Festival City, a practical link for Jaddaf Waterfront residents who shop or dine there without driving around the Business Bay Crossing each time.

The station area is calm and walkable, with Creek-side paths pleasant in cooler months and early evening. Ride across to Festival City for dinner, then return before services finish. Check last departures carefully: water services typically end earlier than the Metro, and missing the last crossing means a taxi around by road.

Festival City and Creek Harbour Crossings

Festival City and Creek Harbour face each other across a wide stretch of water near Ras Al Khor, and the crossing between them is one of Dubai’s most scenic short journeys. One side has Festival City Mall and its waterfront promenade; the other has Creek Harbour’s towers, marina, parks and sunset views towards the Burj Khalifa skyline. For residents of either community, it is ideal for dining or visiting friends without a long road loop.

  • Al Jaddaf to Festival City: a practical link east of Business Bay
  • Festival City to Creek Harbour: a scenic hop between waterfront communities
  • Creek Harbour: reach the promenade and marina without driving
  • Event services: extra crossings can run for festivals, so check on the day

Upper Creek services are typically less frequent than Baniyas abras and run to a timetable rather than leaving when full. Arrive early, especially at weekends and sunset, when Creek Harbour is popular with families. Do not assume a whole group will fit on one departure.

Paying and Planning

On scheduled RTA marine routes, payment is typically by Nol card. Fares are modest, but higher than the traditional abra fare, and vary by route. Top up before you arrive, as small marine stations may lack Metro-style facilities. Confirm current fares, routes and timetables on rta.ae or in the S’hail app, as marine services change as communities grow.

Travel in late afternoon for the best light, carry water in summer even for a short crossing, and keep a road backup in mind if weather changes your plan. Hold hats on breezy days, supervise children at the dock, and follow crew instructions when boarding.

Beyond Baniyas lies a different Creek: new homes, marinas and waterfront evenings in Jaddaf, Festival City and Creek Harbour. Try one crossing at sunset, and you will look for excuses to cross by water instead of sitting in traffic above it.
