Salik for New Car Owners: Registering Your Plate, Adding a Second Car and Fixing Wrong Charges

By DXB TALK ·

Buying your first car in Dubai comes with a long checklist, and Salik is one item many new owners forget until they drive through a toll gate on Sheikh Zayed Road. Salik is Dubai’s electronic toll system, run through the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). There are no cash booths and no stopping — cameras read your plate and charge your prepaid account.

How Salik Works for New Owners

Each Salik gate crossing is charged to the account linked to your number plate. If you have no account, or your balance runs out, you can quickly build up penalties. Charges per gate are modest, typically around a few dirhams, but they apply every time you pass, and peak and off-peak pricing can vary. Always confirm the current tariff on salik.ae or rta.ae, as rates and timings are updated from time to time.

When you buy a car, the dealer or the RTA service centre will often help you open an account, but do not assume it is done. Ask for written confirmation, your account number and how your tag is linked. The Salik tag is a small sticker placed on your windscreen, but the system mainly works from your plate, so correct plate details matter more than the sticker itself.

Registering Your Plate Step by Step

You can register online via salik.ae, through the Salik app, via the DubaiNow app, or in person at an RTA customer happiness centre. You will need your vehicle registration card (Mulkiya), your Emirates ID, and a mobile number and email for alerts.

Once registered, top up before you start driving regularly. Most drivers use:

  • Online top-up via salik.ae or the Salik app using a bank card
  • Recharge cards and vouchers available at petrol stations and supermarkets
  • Auto top-up, so your balance is refilled when it drops below a set amount
  • Top-up through your bank app, if your bank supports Salik payments

Auto top-up is the safest option for new owners. Turn on SMS and email alerts for low balance as well, so a long weekend trip to Abu Dhabi or Sharjah does not leave you driving with an empty account.

Adding a Second Car to the Same Account

Many households in Dubai run two cars, and you do not need a completely separate login for each one. You can add a second vehicle to the same Salik account, which means one balance covers both cars and you get one combined statement.

To add a car, log in to your account and choose the option to add a vehicle, then enter the new plate details exactly as they appear on the Mulkiya — plate category, code and number all matter. You will need a separate Salik tag for the second car. Keep in mind that if the second car is registered under a different person’s name, you may be asked for additional documents or the owner may need their own account. Check the requirements on salik.ae before you start, especially for company cars.

Fixing Wrong Charges and Disputes

Mistakes do happen — a misread plate, a charge after you sold the car, or a duplicate crossing on your statement. Check your statement monthly in the app so you spot problems early. Note the date, time, gate name and amount for any charge you question.

You can raise a dispute online through salik.ae, via the call centre details listed on the official site, or at an RTA centre. Provide your plate details, your Mulkiya copy and a clear explanation. Avoid paying a disputed fine in frustration before you have an answer, but also do not ignore official fines — unpaid Salik fines can block your vehicle registration renewal. If you were charged because your balance was empty, top up immediately and ask whether any penalty can be reviewed; decisions are case by case and not guaranteed.

Keep your contact details up to date whenever you change mobile numbers. Most Salik problems for new owners come down to missed low-balance warnings, not the gates themselves.

With your plate registered, auto top-up switched on and statements checked regularly, Salik quickly becomes background admin rather than a worry. Set it up once, keep your details current when cars change, and you can focus on enjoying the drive around Dubai.
