Indoor Climbing, Ice Skating and Skiing in Dubai: A Summer Activity Primer

By DXB TALK ·

When the pavement is radiating heat by nine in the morning and the sea feels like a warm bath, Dubai residents stop asking what to do outdoors and start looking indoors. Happily, this is a city that built winter inside its malls. Indoor climbing walls, Olympic-sized ice and a full ski slope mean summer can be the most active season of your year, if you know where to go, what to book and what to bring.

Climbing: Walls for First Pull-Ups and Serious Training

Indoor climbing has grown quickly in Dubai, with dedicated centres and mall-based walls offering bouldering, top-rope and lead climbing. Bouldering is the easiest way in: no ropes, low walls, thick mats and colour-coded routes that let you solve problems at your own pace. Most gyms rent shoes and chalk bags, run an induction for first-timers and sell day passes alongside monthly memberships, which typically work out better value if you go twice a week or more.

Dress for movement rather than warmth. Light gym clothes, trimmed nails and shoes that fit snugly make a real difference. Weekday mornings are usually quietest, while evenings and weekends fill with regulars. If you have children, ask about junior sessions and minimum ages, which vary by wall, and book ahead in school holidays.

Ice Skating: From Wobbly Starts to Figure Skating

The Dubai Ice Rink at Dubai Mall is the best-known sheet in the city, an Olympic-sized rink that hosts public sessions, lessons and disco-style skates. There are other rinks in malls and leisure centres across town, often smaller and calmer, which can suit nervous beginners. Skate hire is normally included or available for a small fee, and penguin-style skating aids help younger children find their balance.

  • Wear thick socks and gloves, even if you feel warm walking in — falls on ice sting bare hands.
  • Choose trousers you can move in, and tie long hair back before you step on.
  • Book public sessions online where possible; weekend sessions around lunch are typically the busiest.
  • Consider a short block of lessons if you want to progress beyond holding the barrier.

Arrive a little early to find the right boot size. Boots should feel firm around the ankle without cutting off circulation. Take the first laps slowly, keep your knees soft, and look where you want to go rather than down at your feet. Within half an hour most beginners are moving, if not yet gracefully.

Skiing and Snowboarding at Ski Dubai

Ski Dubai, inside Mall of the Emirates, remains one of Dubai’s great improbable pleasures: real snow, chairlifts, several runs of differing difficulty and a snow park, all held well below freezing while it is around 40 degrees outside. Slope passes typically include outer clothing, boots and equipment, though gloves and hats may be extra, so check the current package before you go and bring your own warm layers underneath.

If you have never skied, book a discovery lesson rather than buying a full slope pass and hoping for the best. Instructors will get you stopping and turning safely, and you will enjoy the day far more. Experienced skiers visiting from colder countries should temper expectations about length — this is a joyful novelty and a brilliant training ground, not an Alpine resort — but for residents teaching children to ski before a winter holiday, it is genuinely useful. Snowboarders and penguin encounters run on their own schedules, so check timings.

Planning a Cool Summer Routine

The trick to enjoying indoor sport in summer is treating it like any other routine. Pick one activity to learn properly rather than sampling everything once, go at off-peak times if your work allows, and keep a small kit bag ready: socks, gloves, a light fleece and a water bottle cover most of these sports. Prices, pass types and session times change through the year and often include resident or weekday offers, so treat any figure you see shared online as approximate and confirm on the venue’s own site before setting out.

Start this weekend, book the beginner session, and give yourself permission to be bad at it for an hour. In a Dubai summer, the coldest rooms in the city are also some of the happiest — and you will step back out into the heat feeling like you have actually been somewhere.
