How to Find a Lost Pet in Dubai: Microchip Records, Municipality Steps and Neighbourhood Alerts

By DXB TALK ·

Losing a pet in Dubai is frightening, and the first hours matter. A dog who slips a lead, a cat who slips out during a delivery, or a pet who panics at fireworks can cover surprising ground — but many are also found very close to home, hiding quietly. Work through the steps in order: search thoroughly, alert the people and systems that can identify your pet, and spread a clear neighbourhood alert. Keep a record of contacts, so nothing is missed.

Search First, Close to Home

Start where your pet went missing and work outwards, calling calmly and listening. Shouting can frighten a nervous animal away. For cats, search at dawn and after dark with a torch, checking under cars, in stairwells, parking levels, gardens, storage areas and behind bins; indoor cats often hide within a short distance and stay silent even when their owner calls. Leave an item that smells of home near the escape point if it is safe to do so, and ask neighbours to check garages, utility rooms and balconies.

For dogs, walk the routes you normally walk, as familiar scents matter. Ask dog walkers, security guards, gardeners and shop staff in the area — in Dubai communities they often notice a loose animal quickly. Revisit parks, empty plots and construction edges repeatedly, especially at quieter times. Take treats and a lead, and if you spot a frightened pet, crouch, turn sideways and let them come to you rather than chasing.

Microchip Records and Veterinary Alerts

A microchip only helps if the details linked to it are current. Contact your vet as soon as possible to confirm the chip number registered for your pet, check that your mobile number and address on the record are correct, and ask them to note the animal as missing. If you adopted or bought your pet and never confirmed the transfer into your name, say so now — this is exactly when incomplete paperwork causes delays. Keep the chip number written down and share it only with vets, authorities and trusted rescuers helping you, rather than posting it publicly.

  • Call your own vet and nearby clinics; email them a clear photo and description
  • Contact local boarding facilities, groomers and pet shops in case your pet is handed in
  • Ask community rescue groups to share your alert in their lost-and-found networks
  • Save one clear recent photo, plus details of collar, markings and any medication needed

Visit or call clinics more than once. A found pet may be brought in days later, and a busy reception team may not connect a new arrival with an earlier alert unless you follow up.

Municipality Steps and Official Reports

Report your pet missing to Dubai Municipality through its official channels, including the Municipality call centre and its online or app services, and follow the current instructions you are given. Confirm directly with the Municipality what information they need and whether found animals in your area are collected or held by a particular service, as procedures can change. Provide the microchip number, a description and your contact details, and ask how often you should check back and how found pets are listed or reunited.

Also notify your building or community management office and local security. Many keep logs of found animals and control access to service areas and car parks where a lost pet may be hiding. If your pet was lost near a boundary area, extend your alerts to the neighbouring emirate too. Keep copies of any report details you are given.

Neighbourhood Alerts That Actually Help

Make one clear alert and share it widely: a large recent photo, pet name, description, where and when last seen, and one reliable phone number. Post it in community and local lost-pet groups, and put simple posters at community entrances, parks and nearby shops with permission. Update the same posts rather than creating duplicates, and remove posters once your pet is home.

Be cautious with responses. Ask anyone who claims to have your pet for a photo and a meeting in a safe public place or at a vet clinic, and do not send money in advance to strangers. When your pet is found, book a vet check, update outdated chip details, and fix the door, harness or routine that failed.
