Shipping Boxes by Air vs Sea Freight to Dubai: Speed, Cost and Customs Differences

By DXB TALK ·

Most people moving to Dubai bring more than a suitcase but less than a whole house. A few boxes of clothes, books, kitchen things and personal items sit in an awkward middle ground: too much for excess baggage, too little for a full container. Your two main choices are air freight and sea freight. Neither is automatically better — it depends on how fast you need your things, how much you are sending, and how carefully you handle customs paperwork.

How Air and Sea Freight Differ in Practice

Air freight moves your boxes on a cargo or passenger aircraft into Dubai, usually via DXB or a nearby cargo hub. It is the fast option, typically measured in days rather than weeks once booked and flown, though collection, export checks and customs clearance add time at both ends. Airlines and freight companies charge mainly by weight and volume, so heavy, low-value items can become expensive quickly.

Sea freight moves your boxes in a shared container (often called groupage or LCL) or, for larger moves, your own container into Jebel Ali Port. It is slower, typically taking several weeks depending on origin port, route and transhipment stops, but the cost per kilo or cubic metre is usually much lower. That makes sea the natural choice for furniture, large boxes and anything you can live without for a while.

Many families split the move: a small air shipment of essentials needed in the first fortnight, and a larger sea shipment of everything else. That costs a little more in admin but removes the stress of waiting for bedding, work clothes or children’s school items.

Cost: What You Are Really Paying For

Quotes are rarely just the flight or the sailing. A door-to-door quote may include collection, packing, export documentation, freight, insurance, Dubai customs clearance, port or airport handling, and delivery to your building. A cheap headline rate that ends at the port can leave you paying handling and storage charges to release your boxes.

Air is typically charged on whichever is greater: actual weight or volumetric weight, which is why duvets and empty plastic boxes can cost more than you expect. Sea is typically charged by volume for shared shipments, so dense, well-packed boxes are good value. Always ask for the total in writing and what is excluded.

  • Ask if the quote is door-to-door or port-to-port / airport-to-airport
  • Confirm insurance cover, excess, and how claims are made
  • Ask about storage charges if customs clearance is delayed
  • Check who pays destination handling and delivery fees in Dubai
  • Get the estimated transit time in writing, not just verbally

Prices change with fuel, season and route, so treat figures from friends who moved last year as a guide only and get fresh quotes from two or three reputable movers.

Customs and Paperwork in Dubai

Both air and sea shipments clear Dubai Customs on arrival. Used personal effects for a resident moving home are often treated differently from new commercial goods, but duty treatment and inspections depend on what you are shipping and your status, so do not assume everything is automatically duty-free. Your mover or clearing agent will usually ask for a detailed packing list, passport copy, visa or entry details, and sometimes an authorisation to clear on your behalf.

Accuracy matters more than speed here. A packing list that says “miscellaneous” for ten boxes invites questions and delays. List boxes honestly by category — clothes, books, kitchenware — keep invoices for new or high-value items, and never pack restricted items without checking first. Dubai Customs publishes guidance at dubaicustoms.gov.ae, and your shipper should flag anything that needs a permit before you seal a box.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose air if your shipment is small, light and urgent: work essentials, a baby’s things, or items for a furnished flat you move into next week. Choose sea if your shipment is bulky, heavy or flexible on timing, and if you have somewhere to receive boxes on arrival.

Whichever route you take, pack as if the box will be stacked, scanned and opened for inspection. Strong boxes, clear labels inside and out, and an honest list will save you more time and money than any shortcut. With paperwork done properly, both air and sea can deliver a smooth start to life in Dubai.
