Gold Investing in Dubai: Coins, Bars and Gold Souk Buying Checks

By DXB TALK ·

Dubai is one of the easiest cities in the world to buy physical gold, from small minted bars in a mall jeweller to rows of shops in the Deira Gold Souk. Knowing what you are paying for, and what you would get back on resale, is what separates a good buy from an expensive souvenir.

Understand the Price Before You Choose a Product

The starting point for any gold purchase is the day’s gold rate, quoted in Dubai by purity, typically for 24-karat, 22-karat, 21-karat and 18-karat gold. Retail jewellery prices build on that rate, plus a making charge and VAT where applicable. Investment bars and coins are usually priced closer to the gold rate, with a smaller premium that varies by size, brand and packaging. Smaller pieces usually carry a higher premium per gram than larger bars, so a 1-gram bar is convenient but rarely the cheapest way to own gold.

Ask the seller to break the price down in writing: weight, purity, rate per gram, making or minting charge, and total. If a shop cannot explain it clearly, walk to the next one. Rates move through the day, so confirm the rate when you buy.

Coins, Bars or Jewellery: Pick for Resale

For investing, most buyers choose minted bars or bullion coins over jewellery. Bars from recognised refiners, sold sealed in assay packaging with a serial number and certificate, are generally easier for dealers to verify and resell. Coins can also be a sound choice when they are well-known bullion issues with clear weight and purity markings, but collectible or commemorative coins may carry a premium you will not recover.

  • Sealed minted bars: clear weight, purity and serial number, easy to store
  • Cast bars: often lower premium on larger sizes, but check refiner and marks
  • Bullion coins: portable and recognisable, confirm they are not priced as collectibles
  • Jewellery: wearable, but making charges are typically much higher and rarely recovered on resale

Jewellery has a place if you want to wear it, but be honest about the purpose. If the goal is investment, minimise what you pay for design, because a later buyer will mainly pay for weight and purity.

Buying Checks in the Deira Gold Souk

The Deira Gold Souk, near Baniyas Road and the creek, is regulated and many shops have traded there for decades, but your own checks still matter. Look for the shop’s trade licence on display, insist on a proper invoice showing weight, purity, price breakdown and shop details, and keep that invoice with the item. The invoice is important for resale, for insurance and if you later travel with the gold.

Check the hallmark and purity stamp on the piece itself, confirm the sealed packaging on a minted bar is undamaged, and make sure the serial number on the bar matches the certificate. Weighing is normally done in front of you, so watch it and compare it with what is written on the invoice. Pay by card or bank transfer where possible so there is a clear record alongside the receipt.

Selling, Storing and the Costs in Between

Before you buy, ask the same shop what they would pay to buy the item back. The buy-back price will typically be based on the gold rate on that future day, minus a small deduction that varies by product and dealer. That spread between buying and selling prices is a real cost, which is why physical gold usually suits a longer holding period rather than short-term trading.

Think about storage, and whether your home insurance covers gold and to what limit. Photograph each item and store copies of invoices separately. Larger holdings also raise questions when travelling, including customs declarations, so check the rules for your destination before you fly.

A Careful First Purchase

Start with a modest, standard product from a reputable seller, such as a sealed minted bar in a common size. Compare the total price per gram at two or three shops on the same day, and confirm current VAT treatment when you buy, as rules for investment-grade gold can differ from jewellery.

Bought patiently, with an invoice, a clear premium and a known route back to resale, gold in Dubai can be a straightforward part of a wider savings plan. Bought in a rush on headline price alone, it rarely is.
