What Is Eid Al Etihad? The Story of the Union Behind UAE National Day

What Eid Al Etihad means, how the seven emirates united on 2 December 1971, and how Dubai marks the day - a resident-friendly guide to the story behind UAE National Day.

Every December, the UAE dresses itself in four colours and celebrates. Flags appear on cars, homes and towers, families gather, and Dubai marks National Day with fireworks and streets full of people. Behind the celebration sits a story every resident should know, because it explains the country we all live in.

That story is summed up in the celebration’s official name: Eid Al Etihad, which means Festival of the Union. With the 2026 celebrations on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 December, with holidays expected then, subject to official announcement, it is a good moment to understand where it comes from.

The Emirates Before the Union

Before 1971, the seven emirates were separate sheikhdoms along the Gulf coast, known internationally as the Trucial States through their treaties with Britain. Each was ruled by its own family: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. Trade and pearl diving linked them, but politically they stood apart. When Britain announced its withdrawal, the rulers faced a choice, and discussions about a federation began.

2 December 1971: Six Emirates Unite

On 2 December 1971, six emirates united to create the United Arab Emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. The signing took place in Dubai, at the guesthouse of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, now remembered around Union House in Jumeirah.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, the driving force behind the federation, became the first President. Sheikh Rashid of Dubai, a founding father alongside Sheikh Zayed, became Vice President. Ras Al Khaimah joined in February 1972, completing the seven emirates. That is why National Day falls on 2 December.

What Eid Al Etihad Means

In Arabic, Eid means festival and Al Etihad means the Union. Eid Al Etihad is the official name of the National Day celebrations, and it points at the idea at the heart of the country: seven emirates, each with its own ruler and identity, choosing to build one nation together. The pride on display is not only about modern skylines, but about a decision in 1971 that still shapes daily life.

The Flag and the Colours You See Everywhere

The UAE flag, raised at the Union’s founding, carries red, green, white and black, colours often linked with Arab heritage and with courage, prosperity, peace and strength. You will see them in the Flag Garden by Kite Beach, along Jumeirah’s streets and on government buildings. The falcon, dhow and desert appear as national symbols too, and the anthem is played at ceremonies and schools across the country.

How Dubai Marks the Day

Dubai typically celebrates with official ceremony and open festivity. In recent years, the holiday has usually included fireworks at waterfront locations, concerts, cultural performances, heritage activities and decorated malls and streets. Specific events for 2026 will be confirmed closer to the date. Schools and workplaces often mark the occasion beforehand with flag-raising, traditional dress and Emirati food, while families gather at home and join evening celebrations outdoors.

How Residents of All Nationalities Can Join In

The UAE is home to people from all over the world, and residents of every nationality are welcomed into this celebration. Joining in respectfully is simple: enjoy the public events, learn a little of the history, and treat the flag and anthem with respect.

  • Stand respectfully when the national anthem is played.
  • Handle flags with care; they are a national symbol.
  • Ask before photographing people in traditional dress.
  • Try Emirati food and heritage activities; they are offered to be shared.

A Celebration of a Choice Made Together

Eid Al Etihad celebrates a choice: that seven emirates would be stronger together than apart. More than five decades later, everyone living in Dubai benefits from that choice every day. Knowing the story behind the flags makes the fireworks mean more.
