UAE National Day in Dubai: How Eid Al Etihad Is Celebrated Across the City

On 2 and 3 December the whole city turns red, green, white and black for Eid Al Etihad, the UAE's National Day. From flag-lined streets and fireworks to heritage villages and family celebrations, here is how Dubai marks the nation's birthday.

There is no celebration in the Dubai calendar quite like National Day. In the days around 2 and 3 December, the city transforms: flags pour down the facades of towers, cars wear the national colours, corniches fill with families, and the night sky erupts over the waterfront. Officially branded Eid Al Etihad — the Festival of the Union — the holiday marks the founding of the United Arab Emirates on 2 December 1971, when the emirates came together as one nation. For residents and visitors alike, it is the proudest, warmest weekend of the year. Here is how Dubai celebrates, and how to join in.

A City Dressed in Four Colours

The visual build-up starts weeks ahead. Flag Day on 3 November opens the season of flags, and by late November the red, green, white and black of the UAE flag is everywhere: draped over government buildings and the Burj Khalifa lit in national colours, strung across the old souqs, printed on scarves and abayas, and mounted on thousands of cars. The flag gardens that appear near beaches — thousands of small flags planted to form giant portraits and messages — are a beloved photo stop. Decorating cars is a cherished tradition, with one important caveat: Dubai Police publish rules each year covering things like obscured number plates and unsafe modifications, so follow the official guidance if you are joining the decorated-car parades that cruise Jumeirah and Sheikh Zayed Road.

Fireworks, Shows and Official Celebrations

The holiday period brings an official programme of celebrations: a major national ceremony (the venue rotates and is announced in advance, with the show broadcast for everyone), military and aerial displays in some years, and fireworks across multiple Dubai waterfronts — in recent editions, spots such as Bluewaters and The Beach at JBR, Dubai Festival City, Global Village and Hatta have all hosted displays on the holiday nights. Shopping malls and attractions run National Day programmes with traditional performances, children’s activities and extended hours. Because line-ups and timings are confirmed fresh each year, check official announcements and the venues’ pages before heading out — and expect the most popular waterfronts to be busy from late afternoon.

Heritage at the Heart of It

Eid Al Etihad is also when Dubai’s heritage scene takes centre stage. The Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and the Shindagha Museum district host traditional music, crafts and storytelling; heritage villages and cultural houses open their courtyards to demonstrations of falconry, dhow building, weaving and coffee ceremony. Emirati hospitality is the theme of the weekend — dates and Arabic coffee offered to strangers, traditional dishes appearing on menus across the city, and everyone, of every nationality, greeted as a guest. It is a wonderful moment to explore the Creek, ride an abra dressed for the holiday, and teach children why the celebration matters. Global Village traditionally marks the occasion with special programming and some of the season’s biggest crowds, so arrive early if you go.

How Families Spend the Holiday

  • Morning: flag-raising moments at schools and communities, brunches, and beach or park picnics in the perfect December weather.
  • Afternoon: heritage neighbourhoods, mall celebrations and the flag gardens for photographs.
  • Evening: fireworks at the waterfronts, decorated-car cruising on the main roads, and festive dinners.
  • Across the weekend: many residents use the public holiday for short trips to Hatta or the east coast — book ahead, as hotels fill.

Community Celebrations

Beyond the headline events, National Day lives in the neighbourhoods. Schools hold flag ceremonies and heritage days in the run-up, residential communities decorate their streets, and families gather for barbecues in the parks and majlis-style evenings at home. Shopping centres in every district run their own programmes, so even if you never cross the city you will find traditional dance performances, children’s craft corners and flag giveaways within a short drive. It is this grassroots layer — a whole population celebrating at once — that visitors remember most.

Joining In Respectfully

Everyone is welcome at Eid Al Etihad — that is rather the point of it. Wear the colours if you like (scarves and pins are sold everywhere), congratulate Emirati friends and colleagues, and dress modestly at heritage and religious sites. Roads around celebration zones can close or crawl, so use the metro for waterfront fireworks where possible, and carry water for the little ones even in December. Above all, slow down and enjoy it: National Day is when Dubai shows you its heart — proud of its past, generous to its guests, and entirely united in celebration. Confirm the official programme for this year’s dates and venues before you go.
