How to Get Clothes Tailored in Dubai: Satwa, Karama and What It Usually Costs

Dubai is one of the easiest cities in the world to get clothes made or altered. Alongside malls and luxury boutiques are long-established tailoring streets where skilled tailors can copy a favourite shirt, build a suit from fabric you choose, or rescue trousers that never sat right. With clear instructions and patience for fittings, it often becomes one of the most useful services in the city.

Where to Go: Satwa and Karama

Satwa, near Jumeirah, is famous for tailoring. Around its main streets and well-known fabric shops you will find rows of small workshops, many serving generations of residents. Customers often buy fabric in one shop and walk a short distance to a tailor recommended by the seller or a friend. The range covers everyday alterations through to formal wear.

Karama, in older Dubai, offers a similar mix of tailors, fabric shops and ready-made stores in a compact, walkable area, popular with residents on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek. Most other communities also have a local tailor for simple jobs, and many malls and dry cleaners take alterations, though prices and turnaround can differ from the specialist streets.

Start With Fabric, or Bring Your Own Garment

For made-to-measure clothing, fabric comes first. Nearby fabric shops stock cottons, linens, suitings, shirting, silks, embroidered materials and fabrics suited to abayas and kanduras. Staff can usually advise how much material a garment needs, which matters because buying too little limits the tailor and too much wastes money. In Dubai’s climate, breathable fibres and lighter weaves are worth considering, especially for summer suits and shirts.

For alterations, bring the garment clean, with the shoes and undergarments you plan to wear with it, because a hem or waist fit changes with heel height. If you want a copy of something you own, bring the original. A good tailor can often reproduce the fit while adjusting pockets, buttons or collar shape.

What People Commonly Have Made and Altered

  • Suits, blazers, trousers and shirts for work and occasions
  • Abayas, dresses, blouses and skirts, including formal designs
  • School uniforms and work uniforms in multiple sets
  • Alterations such as hemming, tapering, taking in waists, shortening sleeves and replacing zips

Tailors vary in what they do best. A workshop excelling at fast, neat alterations may not suit a structured suit, and a suit specialist may charge more than you want for a simple hem. Ask to see finished work and start with a smaller job before committing expensive fabric.

Fittings, Timelines and What It Usually Costs

Expect at least one fitting for anything made from scratch, sometimes two. The first fitting checks the basic shape while changes are still easy, so treat it as essential. Wear suitable shoes, stand naturally, move your arms, sit down, and say clearly what feels tight, loose or long. Tailors can only fix what you point out.

Timelines depend on season and complexity. Simple alterations can sometimes be done within a few days, while a suit or embellished dress takes longer, and demand rises before Eid and in wedding and school seasons. Agree a collection date and build in a buffer before the event you need the clothes for.

On cost, Satwa and Karama are generally considered better value than mall-based services, while complex garments, premium fabrics, handwork and express service cost more anywhere. Prices vary by shop, fabric and design, so do not rely on a precise figure quoted online or years ago. Ask for the full price in advance, confirm whether fabric and trimmings are included, and agree what fitting adjustments cover.

Tips for a Result You Are Happy With

Clear communication prevents most disappointments. Bring photos of the style you want, point to specific details rather than describing them vaguely, and confirm measurements, lining, buttons and finishing in simple language. If there is a language gap, photos and the original garment do much of the talking. Keep your receipt or job slip, and try the garment on in the shop at collection.

Finally, build a relationship. Once a tailor understands your fit and preferences, future orders become faster and more reliable. Many residents keep the same tailor for years, and that continuity, in a fast-changing city, is part of the pleasure of tailoring here.
