UAE Visa Rules for Citizens of Colombia: Visiting, Working and Living in Dubai

How UAE entry, work, family, investor and Golden Visa routes work for Colombian passport holders, and the rules to verify before you travel or take a job.

If you hold a Colombian passport and want to visit, work or live in Dubai, the rules depend entirely on the purpose of your trip — a holiday, a job and a long-term move each follow a different route. The UAE adjusts its entry arrangements from time to time, and Colombia’s status under those arrangements has changed in recent years, so treat this guide as a map of how the system works and always confirm the current position for Colombian citizens on the official UAE portals before you book a flight or resign from a job.

Short visits: tourist entry and visit visas

Nationals of some countries enter the UAE visa-free or with a visa on arrival, while others must arrange a visa before travel through an airline, hotel, travel agency or a UAE-based sponsor. Which of these applies to Colombian passport holders — and for how long you may stay — is set by the UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) and can change with bilateral agreements. Before travelling, verify three things on official sources: whether you need a pre-arranged visa, how many days you may stay, and whether your entry permit can be extended. Overstaying carries daily fines, and working on a tourist or visit status is illegal, even for a trial shift or unpaid work. If a pre-arranged visa is needed, Emirates, flydubai and Etihad all process visas for their passengers, and reputable Dubai travel agencies do the same for a fee.

Working in Dubai: the employment residence route

There is no general “work visa” you can buy for yourself. The standard route is:

  1. A UAE employer offers you a job and applies for your entry permit for employment.
  2. You enter the UAE on that permit (or convert your status if you are already legally in the country).
  3. You complete a medical fitness test and fingerprinting for your Emirates ID.
  4. Your employer issues your labour contract and residence visa, and arranges your health insurance, which employers in Dubai must provide.

Residence through employment is normally valid for two years at a time (three in some free zones historically, with terms set by the issuing authority). Your residence is tied to your sponsor: if the job ends, your visa is cancelled and you get a grace period to find a new sponsor, switch status or leave — check the current grace period, as it varies by visa type. Never pay a company that promises to “sell” you a visa or let you work for others on their licence; that arrangement is illegal and leaves you unprotected.

Other routes to live in Dubai

  • Family sponsorship: a resident earning above the minimum salary threshold can sponsor a spouse and children, with attested marriage and birth certificates required.
  • Golden Visa: a 10-year residence for investors, entrepreneurs, specialised professionals, scientists and outstanding students who meet published criteria, applied for through the ICP or Dubai’s GDRFA.
  • Property investment: buying property above the qualifying value — typically from around AED 750,000 for a two-year visa and around AED 2 million for Golden Visa eligibility, as a guide — can support a residence application.
  • Remote work and freelance permits: Dubai offers a virtual working programme for people employed abroad, and freelance permits through free zones for media, tech and consultancy work, each with income requirements.
  • Student visas: issued through licensed universities and colleges for enrolled students.

Rules that catch newcomers out

Your passport should be valid for at least six months when you enter. Keep your Emirates ID with you — it is your primary identity document for banking, tenancy contracts, phone plans and government services. Traffic fines, overstay fines and loan defaults can all trigger travel problems until they are settled, so keep your record clean. Finally, drug laws in the UAE are extremely strict, including for some prescription medicines that are legal in Colombia; check the UAE’s controlled medicines list and carry prescriptions for anything you bring.

FAQ

Can Colombian citizens get a visa on arrival in Dubai?
Entry arrangements for Colombian passport holders have changed over time. Check the ICP and UAE embassy guidance for the current rule before you travel, and do not rely on old forum posts or airline pages.

Can I look for work while visiting Dubai?
You may attend interviews as a visitor, but you cannot start working until an employer has processed your employment entry permit and residence. Working on a visit status is illegal for both you and the company.

How long can I stay after my job ends?
After cancellation you receive a grace period that depends on your visa category — it has ranged from around 30 days to several months for some categories. Confirm your personal deadline on the ICP portal the moment your visa is cancelled.
